Welcome to Woodlawn
The term "revitalization" can sometimes serve as a stand-in for the more negative connotations of "gentrification," but this is not the case with Woodlawn, a Birmingham neighborhood bursting with creativity and energy. Woodlawn has been going through a period of true revitalization, a kind that respects the area's history and the aspirations of existing residents. Plain neighborhood walls are being decked out in colorful murals, empty lots are being filled with brand-new constructions and local businesses are thriving. The best part: Much of this change is being led by longtime community members.
Working alongside residents, nonprofit partners and local businesses, Woodlawn United and its Woodlawn Foundation aim to create a vibrant, sustainable neighborhood for those who live here. In many ways, they've been successful. Their work is done by leveraging resources across three main pillars: a cradle-to-college and career education pathway, quality mixed-income housing and community wellness programming. The organization has worked to transform the streets of this neighborhood by reducing vacant and abandoned properties and replacing them with desirable housing across all income levels.
"You're getting everything you'd want from a traditionally urban area," says Justin Mundie, a Realtor with eXp Realty. "The Woodlawn Foundation is working with community members to revitalize and refill the street grid—all without displacing anyone."

Century-old homes and new constructions coexist
In addition to some new constructions being built on vacant lots, renovated and restored historic Craftsman and National-style homes can be found in the area—some almost a century old! Home prices range from $12,000 to $470,000, meaning there's a home for nearly any budget. Other home styles include ranch-style homes, American Foursquares and Prairie-style homes. Woodlawn is also becoming a much more colorful place thanks to Blank Space Bham, a nonprofit dedicated to decorating the blank walls of Birmingham with vibrant murals.

A plethora of eateries and shops
Most homes are within walking distance from the Woodlawn Commercial Historic District, which has plenty of retail and dining options to explore. One of the most popular restaurants in the area is SluttyVegan, which serves decadent burgers using plant-based ingredients. There's only one spot in town to get a full breakfast of eggs, bacon, grits and toast for just $4: Bayles Catering and Restaurant. Chef Tony Bayles also serves up lunch with short rib grilled cheese, crispy buffalo chicken sliders, pasta salad and classic BLTs. Bayles opened in 2011, providing delicious meals at unbeatable prices.
Owned and operated by a trio of firefighters-turned-entrepreneurs, Woodlawn Bar and Lounge is the go-to spot for after-work drinks. The bar is the spot for cocktails, hookah, dancing and karaoke. For an eclectic selection of unique vintage clothes and skateboards, locals flock to The Wood. Fifty-Fifth Place is a wildly popular spot for thrifty shoppers. Woodlawn Marketplace was originally planned as a month-long mini-market experience. REV Birmingham, a revitalization and economic development nonprofit, established the market in Fall 2021, but they decided to launch a larger, more permanent version due to its success. Woodlawn Market features 13 local vendors, including Trvl Love Koffee, Bemele Candles, Mattie's Garden, Pearl's Café and Marsuko Jewelry.

My family was originally from the area. Well years ago it was a great place to live it was mixed area and still we never had any problems , now I live at 2nd Ave S and 67th street and I can't remember a day that I didn't hear gunshots I would like to see the crime in the area addressed by someone the police don't show up until it's all over now also I would like to see the state of Alabama since they have gotten so much money this year and their budget has 2million in surplus. They should not have any trouble finding the funds to help get some of the homeless people off the streets around here. At least that's what I feel would be a big help to make it where kids can come outside and play again instead of having to sit inside waiting for the next shooting
