Single-family homes on quiet streets
Penn Farms is a quiet, residential neighborhood just south of historic Hollidaysburg. This hilly community offers homes at a higher average value than the surrounding Altoona Metro Area, hovering around $355,000, while the city average sits around $217,000. Zoned for the Hollidaysburg Area School District and with streets that don’t see a lot of through traffic, this a popular location for families. It has a CAP Index crime score of 2 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4, and parents feel safe letting their kids bike around the neighborhood by themselves or stay out until the sun sets. To the south, there’s farmland and two-lane country roads, while the Hollidaysburg Historic District, with its community events and weekly summertime farmers market, is just a mile north. Library Director of the Hollidaysburg Area Public Library and Hollidaysburg native Kevin Yoder describes the neighborhood as “an area with beautiful houses and a good community.”

Homes between historic Hollidaysburg and Pennsylvania farmland
Penn Farms offers an array of housing. Some properties sit along main thoroughfares and have views of the Allegheny Mountains, while others are clustered in subdivisions. “It’s a very safe community that’s walkable and bikeable,” Yoder says. While this neighborhood doesn’t have bike paths or walking trails, it’s situated away from downtown Hollidaysburg, one mile north. Pennsylvania Route 36 is just south of the neighborhood and heads toward farmland, so there's not a lot of traffic and residents can easily walk their dogs or go for a family bike ride. For between $230,00 and $270,000, potential homebuyers can find bi-level homes from the 1970s. Larger, newer Colonial Revivals will go for between $300,000 and $400,000, while New Traditional homes that were built in the last 15 years typically range in price from $440,000 to $611,000. There are also townhouses available, and these units cost between $100,000 and $230,000, depending on the property’s size.

Chimney Rock Park, Canal Basin Park and Legion Park
Penn Farms is near some of the area’s most popular parks: Chimney Rocks Park, Canal Basin Park and Legion Park. Chimney Rocks Park is just east of the neighborhood and, as the name suggests, has a trail leading to rocky bluffs that overlook historic Hollidaysburg. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2021 and each year at Christmas, a 20-foot metal star is lit up on the hillside. A bit further north, Canal Basin Park is a small green space on the banks of the Juniata River and has a rich history. During the 19th century, workers hauled cargo from the Pennsylvania Canal to rail cars that took it through the mountains along the Allegheny Portage Railroad. Today, Canal Basin features a playground replicating the Sectional Canal Boat, the restored Victorian period Reiser House, the Anne Sloan Borland Performing Arts Pavilion and the Sylvia Schraff Amphitheater. Legion Park offers space for active and passive recreation. Visitors can wander through the Discovery Garden, where there are smaller themed plots such as the Time Garden, which has a 25-foot sundial as its centerpiece. The Kids’ Kingdom Playground sits beside the tulip-lined paths of the garden and has forts, tunnels, slides, swings and more. The park also features a green lawn, nature trails, a fitness area and sports facilities.

What’s happening in Hollidaysburg
“There is always something to do in Hollidaysburg, whether it be a large event or a small one,” Yoder says. The annual WinterFest, Light Up Night and Soup Sampling is one of Hollidaysburg’s most popular events. It begins with a parade, where locals gather on the side of the street, watching as student clubs, local businesses and bands lead Santa Claus into town. Later in the week, local restaurants give out soup to warm up visitors before the Christmas tree is lit when the sun sets. In the fall, the Hollidaysburg Pumpkin Festival brings out the community for live music, games and lots of pumpkin-based foods. And every Tuesday and third Friday from June to September, vendors at the Hollidaysburg Farmers Market sell local produce and artisan goods from booths and tables on Allegheny Street in the Hollidaysburg Historic District.
Shopping and dining a few miles north
Locals like Penn Farms because it’s residential, on the southern edge of Hollidaysburg. The closest grocery store, Martin’s, is about 2 miles north. Nearby, there’s a Marzoni’s Brick Oven & Brewing pizza restaurant and Hoss’s Steak & Sea House. A bit further north sits Sugar Run Brewing Company, which is popular on the weekends or for happy hour, as well as The Meadows Original Frozen Custard, a go-to dessert spot since 1950. This retro yellow and blue creamery has an awning that lights up fluorescent red at night and mini golf in the back. The Logan Valley Mall is about 4 miles north of the neighborhood, while the Plank Road Commons shopping center, with a Sam’s Club and a Walmart Supercenter, is about 3 miles north. The town’s movie theatre and the Blair County Convention Center are in the same area.
