A neighborhood of diversity, proximity and greenery
Blue Hills North is on the north end of Hartford and southeast end of Bloomfield. Although the neighborhood, along with the adjacent Blue Hills, is known for its sizable West Indian population, it's more accurate to say its demographics are highly diverse. It is conveniently located by larger towns and served by several bus routes. “Some people like Blue Hills North because it’s very diverse,” says Wayne Stapleton, a Realtor from eXp Realty with over 20 years of experience in the area. “But others love the proximity to Bloomfield and Windsor, others love all of the parks of Bloomfield, and others love the multiple ways to get to the highway.”
Taking pride in one’s home
Many houses follow Colonial Revival and ranch designs and tend to start at around $220,000. Most homes were built in the 1950s but look much younger thanks to their owners. “Homeowners take pride in their homes,” Stapleton says. “Houses here are well-manicured and maintained.” Lots hover around the size of 0.8 acres, and several homes have extensions to provide more indoor space. Interior square footage tends to be between 700-1,000. More spacious homes can sell for above $260,000.
Near to all the action
CTtransit bus routes 46, 50, 52 and 54 service Blue Hills North. These lines take residents to the Copaco Shopping Center, to Bloomfield in the north and to downtown Hartford in the south. For drivers, Interstate 91 is just a mile and a half away, passing through Hartford to New Haven and up to Springfield, Massachusetts. Hartford, Bloomfield and Windsor are all 4 miles away or less and can be reached in under 15 minutes.
Local restaurants and big-box retailers
Isaac’s Bagel Café II is a popular venue for breakfast and lunch alike, described by some locals as a hidden gem for their delicious bagel sandwiches. Taste 778 is just down Blue Hills Avenue and is the local go-to for soul food. The menu offers half a dozen flavors of wings from pineapple mango to lemon pepper, along with their featured jerk salmon dinner. Thomas Hooker Brewery in neighboring Bloomfield isn’t a conventional bar that stays open into the wee hours of the night, but locals love visiting at happy hour to sample the craft brew selection like the #NOFILTER IPA or at dinnertime to catch the live music and events routinely offered at the establishment. For shopping, residents head down Cottage Grove Road to Copaco Shopping Center, where big-box stores like Stop & Shop, Lowe’s and Burlington can be found.
Parks and recreation in Blue Hills North
Neighboring Bloomfield is full of numerous parks and hiking spots such as 800-acre Penwood State Park. Other residents might prefer stretching their legs closer to home. “Soccer is big here, so they have a lot of soccer programs” Stapleton says. “The soccer fields are huge and have become a meeting place where you’ll see people playing.” Sports fields can be found at Joseph V. Cronin Playground, the Blue Hills Neighborhood Center, the Bloomfield Recreation Department and others.
Blue Hills North brims with schools
Blue Hills North lies in the Bloomfield School District. There are five public schools that students can progress through. Laurel School serves K through second grade students; Metacomet School, grades 3-4; Carmen Arace Intermediate School, grades 5-6; Carmen Arace Middle School, grades 7-8; and Bloomfield High School, grades 9-12. All these schools are in Bloomfield within two miles of Blue Hills North. Laurel School has received a C from Niche while Metacomet School and Carmen Arace Intermediate and Middle have received a C-minuses. At C-plus rated Bloomfield High School, students can participate in many competitive athletics programs, the girls outdoor track team having won the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference State Championships 25 times since 1988. The University of Hartford is just to the southwest in neighboring Blue Hills.
Events in Blue Hills and close by
Neighboring Bloomfield has a Thursday night summer concert series at the Town Green where locals can hear musical groups perform. The Blue Hills Civic Association also puts on events such as a Christmas bazaar. “Blue Hills North is a community where people come together as well as advocate for the community,” Stapleton says. But at the same time, there is no pressure to be involved in the community, and plenty of residents prefer their own space. “If you want to stick to yourself, that’s fine too,” Stapleton says.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
