Central location known for convenience

Across the Boise River from downtown Boise is the Central Bench, a neighborhood where residents are close to their community. “People here are very friendly,” Jennifer Louis, with Silvercreek Realty Group, says. “We talk to our neighbors in the Bench and know them well.” True to its name, Central Bench is a central location of the Treasure Valley, lauded for its proximity and space. “It is one of the most convenient neighborhoods to the Boise Greenbelt, downtown, and the airport,” Louis says. Boise means the “City of Trees,” and is represented throughout Central Bench, with towering mature trees lining the wide streets. Known by locals as “the Bench,” the neighborhood sits about 60 feet above the rest of the city, with hills and mixed terrain at the center of the valley.

From car wash to restaurant hot spot

Central Bench residents laud the access to shopping and dining amenities. They can start their morning at Primal Coffee, a local staple with customer-favorite brews, pastries and breakfast sandwiches. Across the street is Wyld Child, serving American food favorites like hamburgers and nachos, with outdoor seating by a fireplace. “Wyld Child was once an old car wash before being renovated into a tri-restaurant area,” Louis says. The old car wash rain arch with signage is still outside the restaurants. Wyld Child is joined at the former car wash by The STIL Ice Cream parlor and Push & Pour Brewery. The Boise Towne Square shopping mall features big-name retailers like Target, Nordstrom Rack and REI. Downtown Boise is about two miles away for those looking for nightlife or more shopping and dining variety.

Increasing transportation options

Residents in Central Bench primarily drive to get around; however, Louis notes that the city is working to add more options. “They are trying to increase bike paths and make it more bike-friendly,” Louis says. I also see people riding electric scooters all the time.” The Greenbelt along the Boise River is one of the Treasure Valley’s major attractions, a pathway that people can walk or bike down the river. The Boise Airport is about three-and-a-half miles southeast.

Mid-century and new construction homes

Houses in the Bench range from around $360,000 for a bungalow or ranch-style house to more than $850,000 for a historic ranch-style home with different architectural influences. Louis says there are craftsman and mid-century homes made in the 1940s through 1960s, along with some new construction builds. Recently renovated and modern townhouses range from $280,000 to around $500,000, with condos being less common, but in the $230,000 to $450,000 range. Houses sell, on average, after 33 days on the market, compared to the national average of 42.

Helping each other with buddy benches at Jefferson Elementary

Students can start their education at Jefferson Elementary, a C-plus school according to Niche. Jefferson Elementary offers “Buddy Benches” to help students feeling stressed or anxious. They just have to sit on the bench so teachers or other students can talk with them about what is bothering them. The next stop on their educational journey could be South Junior High School, a B-minus institution. Students can participate in sports like basketball, wrestling and volleyball. Teenagers may attend Borah High School, which receives a B-plus. Borah students can participate in clubs like bowling, broadcasting and drama.

Celebrate Spirit of Boise Balloon Classic at Ann Morrison Park

Central Bench offers Boise residents quick access to the Boise Greenbelt, a 25-mile, tree-lined path going along the banks of the Boise River with several trails and a series of parks along the Greenbelt. Locals will run, bike or go for a peaceful walk along the pathway with access to the river, where they can go fishing or floating downstream. Ann Morrison Park is a large park near the neighborhood with plenty of room to walk the dog. It features several sports courts, gardens, trails, and a playground. Ann Morrison Park also hosts the Spirit of Boise Balloon Classic, a five-day hot air balloon festival in late summer with colorful balloons filling the Treasure Valley sky, music and other vendors. Golfers can practice their swing at the Hillcrest Country Club, a members-only club where the 18-hole golf course has views of the Boise Foothills. Hillcrest hosts the Albertsons Boise Open, a PGA Tour golf tournament, every year.
