Boise's hilly eastern enclave
Just east of Boise's downtown city center are the vibrant green nature preserves, trails and spectacular views of Treasure Valley among Boise's Foothills. This rural-suburban neighborhood includes several subdivisions ranging from established to almost new. Most shopping, dining and entertainment for residents of the Foothills is a brief drive or bike ride downtown, while recreation is ample within the neighborhood's expansive limits. Jody Hinton, a 17-year associate broker with Group One Sotheby's Int'l Realty, says, “The Foothills subdivisions are unique for their elevated skyline views overlooking Boise. Can’t really get that at many other places in town.”

Rural sprawl and midcentury or newer homes
Most of Foothills' subdivisions were developed between the mid-1950s and mid-2000s, with single-family homes ranging from $750,000 to $900,000 for a mid-sized midcentury modern or ranch-style house, and $1 million to $1.4 million for a large Craftsman-style model or glassy, modern custom showcase. Lots generally range from a quarter- to a half-acre, but in Quail Ridge and the Highlands, some sprawl to an acre or more. Throughout the Foothills are mature trees, manicured lawns and well-lit mountainous streets lined with paved sidewalks.

Boise School District gets all A's
Local and nearby public schools are some of the best rated in the Boise area. Served by the Boise School District, the nearby options of Highlands Elementary, Hillside Junior High and Boise Senior High all hold overall A-ratings from Niche. Both Highlands Elementary and Hillside Junior High offer STEM-based learning and comprehensive sports and music programs, while Boise Senior High is known for its high-performing Track and Field team and acclaimed performing arts program that includes theater and orchestra.

The Foothills host several diverse green spaces for recreation
Hinton says, “There’s a lot of preserved land, the city has been committing to private land purchases to preserve much of the Foothills for hiking trails since the early 2000s.” There's more than 80,000 acres of green space for residents to enjoy here, with 190 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails, tracing ponds, mountains and open meadows. Race along extreme dirt-bike tracks at Boise Bike Park, or go fishing, kayaking and swimming at the Boise River Greenbelt from spring through fall. Residents bring their golf clubs to the 18-hole courses at Quail Hollow Golf Club or the more upscale, private Crane Creek Country Club, and delight in fields' worth of flowers at the Idaho Botanical Gardens. The Wahooz Family Fun Zone is just 13 miles west in Meridian, and offers mini golf and a waterpark. For a little culture, residents can head to Downtown Boise attractions like the Basque Museum and Egyptian Theater, a restored landmark movie palace.

Downtown Boise hosts fine dining and shopping
Most nearby grocery shopping and dining is in Downtown Boise. Residents frequent Albertsons or the Boise Co-op and its companion wine shop, which sells some vintages from Idaho's own Snake River region. Janjou Patisserie offers hot coffee and fresh croissants, while The Warehouse Food Hall hosts several fast-casual dives, from desserts, pizzas, dumplings and a cocktail bar. For a night out, Anthony's Restaurant has seafood specials. In addition to downtown's lively local breweries and taverns, some nearby neighborhood nightlife can be found at the Highlands Hollow Brewhouse.
The Boise Co-Op is located just a few blocks from Saddleback Park in the Foothills.

Interstate 84 for commutes and biking within Boise
The Foothills are 8 miles to the bustling Interstate 84. Commute times to Meridian, Nampa and Caldwell can take 30 to 40 minutes during rush-hour traffic, as they're a 20-mile drive from home. Hinton says, “There's sidewalks and bike lanes but keep in mind the Foothills have steep inclines to make biking difficult. It’s within close proximity to many walkable residential neighborhoods with less elevation though.” Close to downtown Boise, with ample homes, sprawling natural recreation hotspots and quality public schools, the hillside communities of the Boise Foothills are a popular perch for families looking to set down roots.
