A waterfront East Boston community right by Broad Sound
Bordered by Chelsea Creek on one side and Belle Isle Inlet on the other, Harbor View-Orient Heights is an East Boston neighborhood that blends peaceful water views with modern amenities, including waterfront restaurants, shopping centers and transit stations. “This is a beautiful community that’s right on the harbor, and the neighborhood name is very appropriate,” says Jamie Cholette, a Realtor at Boston Harbor Real Estate with 13 years of experience. “Harbor View is like a nice happy medium between Boston and Cape Cod; it’s very close to downtown Boston and has the Blue Line.” Comprised mainly of triple-deckers and converted boutique condos that are never more than a few minutes away from the public parks and beaches, this is a scenic enclave wedged between Broad Sound and the Boston Logan International Airport.
Large porches and tree lined streets are commonplace in Harbor View-Orient Heights.

From contemporary condos to pre-war triple-deckers
Area homes include remodeled brick triple-deckers from the early 1900s, boutique pre-war and contemporary condo developments, two-unit and multi-family properties and a handful of single-family houses. Condo units from the 1900s often sit alongside newly converted condominiums that require monthly HOA fees. Typically for condos, one to two-bedroom units go between $500,000 and $800,000, while three-bedrooms can fetch over $1 million. “Many of the new condo projects are either converted boutique condos or newly developed low rises,” Cholette says. “The neighbors are actively involved, and the district does not allow large or tall housing projects to be built in East Boston. This means the new buildings tie in well with the existing cityscape, and everything here maintains the old, charming residential look and feel.” In addition, newly built developments use double or triple-pane windows to address the potential noise issues due to the area’s proximity to the Boston Logan International Airport. Duplexes and two-unit homes generally sell from $800,000 to just under $1 million, and entire multi-family properties and triple-deckers are listed between $1 million and $2.5 million. Peppered throughout the neighborhood, single-family cottages and ranch-styles on raised foundations, built specifically to withstand flooding and weather corrosion, go for $700,000 to $1 million. Most homes have stairs that lead right into the sidewalks, and yard spaces for single-family homes are usually around 3,000 to 5,000 square feet. Most streets are lined with towering green trees.

Beaches and public parks abound in Harbor View
It’s easy to connect with nature in Harbor View-Orient Heights. The East Boston Greenway is a popular rail trail that runs through the neighborhood, and the waterfront Belle Isle Marsh Reservation, a nature preserve and wetland area, has a looped hiking path and an observation tower. Constitution Beach is another spot for sports, beach time and watching planes take off. Bremen Street Park is right next to the airport with a community garden, a spray fountain and play area and an expansive green field. “The East Boston Yacht Club is a cool, unique amenity specific to Harbor View,” Cholette says. “Not a lot of places around here have marinas. Plus, there’s the public Porrazzo Skating Rink, tennis and squash courts and all sorts of public amenities right in the community.” Fredericks Park, Curtis Park Street and East Boston Memorial Park are additional outdoor places that people frequent.

Proximity to Boston and Cambridge
The area is served by MBTA bus lines and nearby T stops, such as Beachmont, Orient Heights, Airport and Maverick stations. All stations have the Blue Line, which has direct access to Boston. Massachusetts Route 1A, Interstates 90 and 93 also pass through the neighborhood, providing convenient routes to Cambridge and downtown Boston, both of which are within 10 miles of Harbor View. Hospitals are a few miles away, including MGH-Revere HealthCare Center, Mass General: Chelsea HealthCare Center and Chelsea Naval Hospital. The Boston Logan International Airport is located right on the southeast side of the community. “I try to let everyone know that only 2 runways are on rotation that go over residential homes in East Boston, and the airport doesn’t use the runways daily,” Cholette says. “However, if you are concerned about hearing airport noise, then East Boston might not be the best move. The noise level can be a very personal preference and tolerance level.”
There is no shortage of public transportation in and around Winthrop Highlands.
