A changing Boston neighborhood divided by Interstate 93
Separated by Interstate 93 on the border of Somerville and Charlestown, Medford Street-The Neck is an eclectic, urban neighborhood just outside Boston. The construction of Interstate 93 through the neighborhood in the 1950s, part of Boston’s urban renewal efforts, altered the neighborhood’s original landscape. "The highway and Sullivan Station changed the connection the neighborhood had. The whole area used to have residential homes,” says Jesse Macdonald, Realtor at Gibson Sotheby's International Realty in Charlestown. Today, the neighborhood is essentially divided in two. The western side of the neighborhood has an enclave of homes wedged between Somerville and the highway that is still technically part of Charlestown. Macdonald explains that, although the area has no official name, some call it the “Lost Village” or “Forgotten Charlestown.” Others refer to only that part of the neighborhood as “The Neck.” The eastern side of the neighborhood is still connected with the rest of Charlestown, on the Mystic River.Either way, the area offers extensive transportation options into Boston’s city center and a diverse, unique community within walking and biking distance of many retailers and restaurants near the Mystic River.

An eclectic mix of urban living options including condos and townhouses
Homes in the neighborhood run the gamut of urban residential options: properties span from renovated single-family homes from the 1800s to newly built, modern townhouses. The neighborhood’s quirky mix of architecture creates an eclectic, interesting streetscape that suits a variety of needs. “There will be a whole apartment complex next to a single-family or two-family home,” says Grace Bloodwell, Real Estate Broker at Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage in Charlestown. She explains that the area attracts a diverse mix of people. “We really see young professionals, families, empty nesters and medical students,” she says. The neighborhood is split nearly evenly between renters and owners, and properties usually sell for between $800,000 and $1.5 million. One-bedroom condos can sell for as low as $500,000, while renovated, three-bedroom townhouses can reach nearly $2 million.

Local spots along Broadway and more at Assembly Row
Tavern at the End of the World is a popular neighborhood establishment, serving beers and pub grub in its dimly lit, casual venue. “They have the best curry fries in Boston,” Bloodwell says. On Broadway, locals will find more local spots like Vinny’s Ristorante, which serves authentic Italian dishes including heaping piles of pasta, deli meats and pizza. “[Broadway] is a nice, wide tree-lined boulevard. They widened it within the last year for bikes and pedestrians,” Bloodwell says. For groceries and higher-end shopping, Assembly Row is less than a mile away. This development on the river has a Trader Joe’s, T.J. Maxx, Lululemon and more restaurants and stores.

Recreation in the neighborhood and a waterfront redevelopment plans
Ryan Playground overlooking the Mystic River has served as a green space with ball fields for the neighborhood. Although public waterfront space in Charlestown is limited, the Flatley Company, a real estate development company, has plans to redevelop over 25 acres of the waterfront in the coming years. “There is unused open space, old parking lots and some buildings being underutilized. There is a lot of opportunity there on the water,” Macdonald says. “Their plan is to do something similar to Assembly Row, with office space, apartments, condos and acres of open space.” For more recreation, Clougherty Pool, a public outdoor swimming pool just off Bunker Street, is just next to Doherty Playground and basketball courts.

The high school offers early college and career pathways including technology, business and health careers. Commuting into Boston’s city center on the Orange Line and I-93
Commuters can take the Orange Line into Boston’s financial district from Sullivan Square, and Bloodwell notes that many residents work at Massachusetts General Hospital, also nearby off the Orange Line. Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority buses service lines through the neighborhood as well. For those who prefer to drive, Interstate 93 goes through the neighborhood. Boston Logan International Airport is also about 4 miles east.
