Secluded and sought-after mountain community
Tall Timber is a remote neighborhood in the hills of Sugarloaf Mountain that has winding country roads leading to secluded mountain homes. “It’s the best neighborhood on Sugarloaf,” says Associate Broker Jimmy Keith with RE/MAX of Boulder, who has over 25 years of experience. “People definitely live there on purpose because it’s friendly and easy to get along with the other people.”
Mountain trails and scenic views
The Betasso Preserve’s several hiking and biking trails weave up and down the eastern part of the neighborhood, including the Betasso Link Trail, Canyon Loop, Benjamin Loop and Fourmile Link Trail. Hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding and on-leash dog walking are allowed on the trails, though biking is limited and dependent on the day. There are picnic tables near the parking lot for relaxing. Bummers Rock is a scenic overlook in Betasso Preserve that’s known for its panoramic views of the mountains and grassy plains below.
Further east along Boulder Canyon Drive, Boulder Flycasters Memorial Park is a small open space dedicated to the area’s Trout Unlimited chapter for conserving and protecting coldwater fisheries. Right next to it is the Boulder Canyon Tunnel, a locally famous scenic spot where people can drive through the mountain. Boulder Creek winds throughout the entire area, providing water recreation such as kayaking, tubing and fishing.
Single-family homes in the hills
Homes in Tall Timber sit on large acres of land and are surrounded by forestry. “The homes are a little bit expensive, but they’re highly desirable and executive-oriented,” Keith says. Contemporary mountain homes built in the late 1970s are common, range from 3,000 to 4,500 square feet and can cost between $1.4 million and $1.7 million. Some of these homes have modern features such as arches and bright colors, while others resemble rustic cabins with their wood exteriors, porches and picture windows. There are also older, traditional homes built in the 1960s that have plain features and vinyl siding. These properties range from 2,000 to 3,000 square feet and can cost $900,000 to $1.1 million. Ranch-style homes are rare in Tall Timber, but there are a handful with farmhouse features and similar price points.
Boulder’s top-performing public schools
Families can send their children to schools in the Boulder Valley School District. Flatirons Elementary School maintains an A grade from Niche and has a Nordic Ski program with trips into the mountains. Casey Middle School, which earns an A-minus grade, is considered a Pre-Advanced Placement School. Boulder High School is one of the oldest established high schools in Colorado and maintains an A grade. It has one of the district’s largest Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Education (CLDE) programs, offering five world language options.
Head into Boulder for food and necessities
Tall Timber’s remote landscape lacks commercial development, making it a requirement to travel for shopping and dining out. Downtown Boulder is 6 miles away and has restaurant and retail options. There are clothing stores like Mabel and Moss and sports equipment shops like University Bicycles. West End Tavern is a brick pub with an extensive cocktail list that serves traditional bar food. Across the street, Cozobi Fonda Fina specializes in traditional Mexican cuisine. For grocery shopping, Boulder’s 28th Street corridor is 7.5 miles away from Tall Timber and has Whole Foods Market, Sprout’s Farmers Market and Trader Joe’s.
Traveling through Tall Timber
With Tall Timber’s location in the hills, the neighborhood is primarily car dependent. Sugarloaf Road is the main thoroughfare and connects with State Highway 119, also known as Boulder Canyon Drive. This route can take commuters into the City of Boulder. Most of the neighborhood's roads are paved and narrow, branching off from Sugarloaf and winding through the landscape, though there are a handful of dirt roads too. The Denver International Airport is 48 miles east for commercial flights.
Living in a unique environment
The thick forestry of Tall Timber and the proximity of Boulder Creek both may present unique environmental challenges. Stand-still water on roads could result in potential flooding, but levees have been built along the creek to reduce the risk. Additionally, because of surrounding woodlands and grassy fields, there is also a risk of possible wildfires. The Sugarloaf Fire Protection District (SFPD) Station Two is located in the neighborhood, on Sugarloaf Road. The volunteer fire station responds to all types of fire and medical emergencies. A staple in the community, the SFPD also hosts regular fundraising events and holiday activities, such as Easter egg hunts and trick-or-treating, for the surrounding communities.
