Surrounded by several George’s County public schools, Chapel Forge offers suburban convenience tucked away from Bowie’s bustling thoroughfares. Though Washington, D.C., to the west, and Baltimore, to the north, are both nearby, highways don’t cut through the neighborhood. However, Stephanie Cooper, a Realtor with RLAH Real Estate who has sold several homes in the city, says this location is essential for school walkability. “Kids only walk to school if the school is in their neighborhood. Because of commuters, Bowie can get pretty traffic-heavy before and after school, so it’s safest for kids not to cross any major streets.” Whitehall Elementary School, Samuel Ogle Middle School and Bowie High School are all within walking distance. Locals can also easily access several green spaces, like Whitemarsh Park, and shop at grocery stores along Annapolis Road.

Locals can watch plays and musicals at the Bowie Playhouse, located at the park’s core since 1976. Cooper says visiting the Patuxent Research Refuge, 9 miles northwest, is also popular. “It’s technically in Laurel, not Bowie, but it’s a massive piece of land,” she says. “People all across Prince George’s [County] drive up to hike there.” The refuge’s 25 miles of hiking, biking and horseback riding trails stretch across hardwood forests, meadows and wetlands.
