Suburban Neighborhood in Bridgewater, New Jersey
Somerset County 08807
Located at the junction of Bridgewater, Somerville, and Bound Brook and at the intersection of several major highways, the community of Finderne is at the center of much of the Raritan Valley’s action. With a rich history and a great variety of amenities, Finderne stands out among its neighbors as a community that boasts some of Central Jersey’s greatest features while offering regionally competitive home prices.
Finderne’s Celtic-sounding name has no clear origin; a 1979 Courier-News article says that Finderne Avenue and the community surrounding it may have derived their names from a character in a Sir Walter Scott novel. The neighborhood’s history far predates Finderne’s 1841 naming, as George Washington’s troops passed through the area – then named Van Veghten’s Bridge – in 1777. Finderne owes its naming and its origins to the arrival of the railroad in Somerset County, which resulted in the suburbanization of the area during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and the construction of the local Finderne Hotel in 1895. What ensued was the growth of this formerly agricultural community into a modern suburb, whose streets tell the rich history of Finderne. Modern farmhouse-style homes evoke memories of Finderne’s agricultural past, while Cape Cods, ranch-style homes, and bungalows popular in the early decades of the 20th century are reminders of Finderne’s somewhat recent growth. Finderne’s homes tend to sell for between $300,000 and $500,000, marking Finderne as one of the least pricey options for residing in semi-rural Somerset County.
While Finderne is a small community, there is much to see here. The Derrick Van Veghten House, which served as headquarters to George Washington’s general Nathanael Greene from 1778 to 1779, is a popular attraction for history buffs, and serves as a reminder of Finderne’s centuries-old heritage. For a more sensory form of discovery, Finderne is home to several restaurants which stand out due to both their acclaimed food and their unique flair. Big Pink’s BBQ, a popular food truck, sells flavorful pulled pork sandwiches and other barbecued delights, while Soprano’s Pizza offers both New York-style pizzas and a vast collection of memorabilia related to the hit HBO television series The Sopranos, a cultural emblem of North Jersey. For the classic diner experience, the Bridgewater Diner is a well-established eatery for visitors and locals alike, offering hearty meals in a homey environment.
Finderne’s natural beauty continues to present itself in many ways, from well-tended gardens on residential streets to the Harry Ally Park, a small park that invites locals to enjoy its basketball, tennis, and playground facilities, surrounded by trees and bordered by vast fields. Sports fans may enjoy catching a baseball game or two at the TD Bank Ballpark, home to the Somerset Patriots baseball team, whose founders are commemorated by statues at the park’s entrance.
Finderne’s students attend highly-ranked public schools, from the “A-“ rated Adamsville Elementary School – lauded for the quality of its teachers and its diversity – to the Somerset Secondary Academy, whose unique exterior advertises the school’s devotion to helping classified students achieve their academic best through innovative programming.
Access to major highways puts Finderne residents within an hour’s drive from Lower Manhattan, providing commuters with easy access to the Big Apple’s opportunities. This proximity to the big city, together with this community’s small-town charm, gives residents the best of both worlds.
