A residential pocket in Brockton
In the early 20th century, the small Massachusetts town of Brockton was the largest manufacturer of shoes in the United States. Deemed “Shoe City” by local newspapers, Brockton’s shoe district was located around the junction of Centre and Montello, and the historic Anglim Building in Montello – a five-story brownstone known as “Brockton’s First Skyscraper” – still stands today and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. “Montello has seen lots of ebbs and flows, as most urban neighborhoods do,” says Lori Gowell, a second-generation owner of Gowell’s Homemade Candy on Main Street. “But the character of this neighborhood has remained strong throughout the years.” The small suburban community features ranch-style single-family homes, pocket parks and public schools, making it a convenient location for families with children. Montello also sits next to Ames Nowell State Park and the city’s Main Street, providing residents with abundant outdoor, retail and dining opportunities.

The community is dominated by single-story ranch-style homes built throughout the last century. Split-levels, Cape Cods, Colonial Revivals and Garrison-styles are also scattered throughout the neighborhood. Residential lots vary from 6,000 square feet to half-acres, and the streets are interconnected. Although sidewalks are rare, one can still see neighbors taking walks. Home prices typically range from $400,000 to $600,000, though some new builds with colonial-inspired architecture can fetch around $800,000. Several townhouses are listed in the $300,000s, while triple-deckers and multi-family homes go from $600,000 to about $800,000.

Most homes are within walking distance of one of the area playgrounds, including McKinley Park, Hillstrom Farm Park and Tukis Playground, which is where Little League practices take place. Ames Nowell State Park welcomes mountain biking, hiking and horseback riding throughout its several rustic trails. Boating, canoeing and fishing on Cleveland Pond, and cross-country skiing during the long winter months are also options. People also like to take their dogs on long walks, and families can picnic by the lake. Westgate Lanes has bowling alleys, arcade games and pool tables, and Carousel Family Fun Center has a roller skating rink.

Restaurants along Main Street
The neighborhood borders Main Street on its west side, which is dotted with local restaurants and shops. Residents can shop for groceries at Price Rite Marketplace, and the area is close to two Walmart locations. Tommy Doyle’s Pub serves hand-selected meats and seafood in a traditional Boston-style Irish pub. For dessert, Gowell’s Homemade Candy is a second-generation family business that makes small batches of candy in copper kettles over open-flame stoves. “My husband’s parents opened Gowell’s in 1959, and the police had to shut down the street so that they could push the big copper kettles down the middle of the road from our original location,” Gowell says. Gowell’s Homemade Candy is a fixture within the Brockton Business Association, which organizes an annual holiday parade on Main Street.
