Waterside Bronx neighborhood that celebrates its diversity

Castle Hill is a residential neighborhood in the southeast section of the Bronx known for its close communities and convenient highway access to Manhattan. Situated along the banks of Westchester Creek, pockets of Castle Hill deliver views of the East River. The neighborhood has attracted diverse communities of immigrants from areas like Bangladesh and Pakistan, reflected in the vibrant eateries and houses of worship, including churches and mosques, found along Castle Hill Avenue. “It’s a melting pot of people,” says Marithza Mcfadden, a Bronx native and agent with Keller Williams Realty NYC Group. As with other areas of the Bronx, families try to live close to one another and properties are often passed to relatives. “The Bronx is pretty much people saying, ‘I want to stay close to my family.’ So, they’ll pass on the house to someone that’s in the family,” Mcfadden says.

The Castle Hill Houses include 27 low and mid-rise brick buildings that are part of NYCHA, between Lacombe and Seward Avenues. On Zerega Avenue, Bridgeview on the Water is a gated community of Mediterranean-style villas, with townhouses selling for $920,000 to $1.2 million and offering views of the East River and the Whitestone Bridge.

Pugsley Creek Park stretches nearly 84 acres on the southern edge of the neighborhood along Westchester Creek. The park, which also features a baseball field, connects to Castle Hill Park on the neighborhood’s southern tip, also known as Castle Hill Point. Here, areas allow for fishing and additional water recreation. Less than a mile to the west, Soundview Park spans 269 acres and includes a running track, amphitheater, and plenty of green space. I have a bus transfer here and overall, no matter daylight nor nightfall, I feel safe and see it as a family neighborhood. Kind people. Near great means of transportation, and fairly priced food and shops. Just be smart and read a situation, as you should any neighborhood.

Living in Castle Hill for the past nine years I would say it's average, it's not the best place to live but it's something and it's not exactly the worst place to live. There's a lot of fast food places the usual and the train station from where I live in the neighborhood is only a four minute walk for me. I wish there was better food options and more for the community to actually come together in a way. The commute to Manhattan isn't that bad either on a good day it may take me around 45 minutes to get to the city. The rent has raised more and more over the years and slowly but surely people are starting to move out.
