The East Bronx neighborhood of Parkchester is home to diverse immigrant communities and families who’ve resided in the area for decades. Much of the Parkchester neighborhood is devoted to the Parkchester residential buildings, originally built by MetLife and opened in 1938. While some of the buildings’ units are rentals, many are condominiums, managed either by Parkchester North or Parkchester South, with the Metropolitan Oval at the center of the complexes and built-in restaurants and retailers. “When you say Parkchester, everyone automatically thinks of the condos,” says Marithza Mcfadden, a Bronx native and agent with Keller Williams Realty NYC Group. “It’s great because everything is right there. You’ve got the 6 line, Macy’s, Starbucks – you’ve got so much in that little area.”

Parkchester condos and brick family homes
Some 50,000 residents reside in the 171 buildings that comprise the Parkchester residential community. The large brick buildings are adorned with fanciful terracotta statues and plaques. A two-bedroom condo in one of the Parkchester buildings can cost between $259,000 to $320,000. On the western side of the neighborhood brick colonial rowhouses can be found near Bronx River Avenue. Two and three-family brick homes run between $695,000 to $1.3 million. Single-family homes are rare and can cost between $590,000 and $1 million. Several co-op buildings can be found as well on Thieriot Avenue.
International cuisines plus shopping on Metropolitan Avenue
In the Metropolitan Oval, Hook & Reel serves up po’ boys and Cajun grub and Zaro’s Family Bakery offers kosher New York bagels. Macy’s and Marshall’s also populate Metropolitan Avenue. Dominican fare can be found at Ajo y Oregano on White Plains Road, and other cuisines, including Mexican and Jamaican, can be found in the neighborhood. Khalil Biryani House serves biryani dishes and is part of Bangla Bazaar, an area of Bangladeshi businesses and restaurants. Grocery shoppers have many options, including Key Food on Metropolitan Avenue, Foodtown on West Avenue and CTown on Unionport Road.
Central greenspaces and Caserta Playground
In the center of the Parkchester residential development, Bronx Unionport Parkchester Park features a large fountain with bronze statues, benches beneath trees, and surrounding greenery. The nearby Oval Park is another greenspace, which hosts the annual Christmas display. Off St. Raymond Avenue, Caserta Playground offers basketball courts and play structures. The Bronx Zoo is about a mile and a half north of the neighborhood.
Annual December events
In December, St. Helena’s Church typically hosts an annual Kwanzaa celebration, and Santa visits the Oval every weekend and poses for photos.
