Country atmosphere and access to transportation in Brooklyn
Brooklyn, the county seat of Windham, is 43 miles from Hartford, Connecticut. This rural town is known for its natural scenery and convenience. “Brooklyn is conveniently located,” says Mandy Gruslin, an associate broker with Kazantzis Real Estate, who has been working in the industry for 16 years. “Route 6 runs through it, and you can get to Rhode Island and Hartford. Many people work there.” While Brooklyn’s rural nature is a big draw, state parks, shopping, dining and transportation are close at hand.
Commuters use U.S. Highway 6
U.S. Route 6 bisects the area, allowing commuters to head west to Hartford or east to Rhode Island, 20 miles away. Both locations can be reached in under an hour. Brooklyn has minimal public transportation, with only three bus stops on the University of Connecticut 993 Green Line. From Monday to Friday, the bus takes residents into Willimantic,16 miles away, and Danielson, 5 miles away. Those using the bus may park their cars in the Brooklyn Park & Ride along Route 6. Day Kimball Healthcare is 10 miles north along state Route 169, and the Bradley International Airport is 55 miles west. Houses of worship such as Open Bible Baptist Church, Our Lady of La Salette Church and Federated Church of Christ are along Route 6.
Shopping and dining along Route 6 and in Putnam
Brooklyn Country View Restaurant serves American fare for breakfast and lunch. The restaurant has an upstairs antique shop and a self-serve driving range nearby. Along Route 6, Hank’s Restaurant and Bar offers American comfort food in a rustic atmosphere. Further down the road, Sweet Peas Fine Foods & Farm Market offers sweet treats, fresh produce and a seasonal menu. Other restaurants and retailers line the highway, including a Walmart Supercenter, discount stores and several pizza places. For more shopping and dining, Danielson has a Big Y World Class Market for groceries, 4 miles away, and a collection of shops and eateries along Main Street. Putnam, 14 miles away, has several malls and restaurants in its downtown. “People drive to Putnam for shopping and dining,” says Gruslin. “Everybody does that, and that’s not too far at all.”
Homes on large lots in Brooklyn
The area is dominated by farmland and open space. Winding roadways lead past homes on large lots, most with long driveways. Gruslin says the most common style is Colonial Revival. Other housing styles are saltbox, split-level and minimal traditional, which range from $310,000 to $560,000. A few townhouses and condos in East Brooklyn and near Route 6 range from $200,000 to $375,000. The CAP Index crime score is a 3 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.
Fishing, swimming and hiking in state parks
Brooklyn is surrounded by state parks and bordered by the Quinebaug River. Across the river in Danielson is Quinebaug Lake State Park an 88-acre lake used for fishing and non-motorized boating. During the warmer months, the lake can become crowded with swimmers. The Mashamoquet Brook State Park, 6 miles away, is over 1,000 acres and has 6.5 miles of trails, including a mile-long equestrian trail. The park also offers fishing, hiking and boating.
Students attend local and regional schools
Children can attend Brooklyn Schools, which gets a B-minus from Niche. Brooklyn Elementary School and Brooklyn Middle School each earn a B-minus. Students have school choice for high school and most attend Killingly High, which also receives a B-minus, and offers a regional agricultural education program. Through this program, students gain experience and college credits from the University of Connecticut.
August brings the Brooklyn State Fair
The most significant event in the area is the Brooklyn State Fair in August along Fairgrounds Road. Established in 1806, the fair has classic fair food and carnival rides. Livestock brought in for awards may be petted and admired in the barn areas, while live music plays in the background. The fair is rich with competition and entertainment, with everything from pie-eating contests to competitive woodcarving.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
