A family-friendly neighborhood with suburban vibes
Dyker Heights has all the attributes that most New York City residents can only dream of: streets that fall quiet in the evening, block parties with barbecues, single-family homes with parking spaces and private, manicured lawns. This quasi-suburban lifestyle, plus a plethora of local stores and restaurants, attracts a diverse group of renters and homeowners, many of them families. The neighborhood is home to people from all over the world, including Italy, China, Latin America, Lebanon and Greece. Residents take pride in their annual holiday spectacle, in which hundreds of Dyker Heights homes are decked out in over-the-top Christmas lights, drawing in thousands of spirited New Yorkers from across the five boroughs. Outside of the holidays, Dyker Heights residents get this secluded, charming south Brooklyn neighborhood all to themselves.
Dyker Heights is the perfect neighborhood for professional families and established retirees.

A limited inventory of single- and two-family homes
Low horizon lines, tree-lined streets and spacious living quarters are part of the area’s appeal, enticing residents to stay put. According to the city’s most recent 2020 census, most homeowners have been there for over two decades. This makes for not only a tight-knit community but an equally tight housing inventory. Apartment or condo buildings are practically nonexistent. Instead, colonial-style single- or two-family houses are the norm. Smaller two-bedroom houses list between $700,000 and $900,000, while three-bedrooms fetch $1 million to $1.6 million. Two-family houses range between $1.5 million and $3.5 million. While they rarely hit the market, a group of mansions line 11th Avenue in worldly styles ranging from Italianate and French Country to Tudor, Queen Anne and Mediterranean.

Community-focused shopping and dining
The shopping and dining scene largely echoes the neighborhood’s historical heritage, with a wide selection of Italian markets, delis, pizzerias and cafes. La Bella Marketplace has a loyal following thanks to its homemade sausages and soups, imported cheese and fresh mozzarella. Greek Meze serves authentic souvlaki and halloumi, while Mexican Las Chelitas specializes in flautas and horchata. While locals prefer to frequent mom-and-pop joints, both 13th Avenue and 86th Street offer commercial chains like SuperFresh, Outback and Walgreens.

Holiday charm that draws a crowd
Many know Dyker Heights for its legacy of extravagant holiday displays. Even with all the festivities in Midtown Manhattan, thousands of New Yorkers schlep out to the neighborhood for a taste of suburban wonderland. Owners of historical mansions and single-family homes drape their exterior in Christmas lights and fill their lawns with larger-than-life decorations—some even hire local decorators to take over. Each year, the spectacle generates buzz across the city and gives the local community a sense of pride.

Some avenues are really nice, other blocks not so much. A lot of Italians. Neighbors are also not the friendliest but it's Brooklyn, what do you expect?

Dyker Heights is overall a safe and family-friendly neighborhood. It is mostly residential but is great for families to visit during the holidays when houses are beautifully decorated for Christmas.

It is a quite and friendly neighborhood. It is a green neighborhood with diverse people. I have lived here for 7 years. It has good food from different part of the world. It offers facilities for elder people( such as nursing home, activity clubs). It suits the need for people in different ages. I usually pick up flowers from stores around my house. I love its convenience.
