Blythe Island offers outdoor recreation and a secluded feel
Surrounded by the South Brunswick and Turtle Rivers, Blythe Island is known for its peaceful surroundings and access to water recreation. “It’s very rural — not just Blythe Island but the surrounding area as a whole,” says Deanne Cohrs, a Realtor with Keller Williams Golden Isles who’s sold homes in the area since 2017. “The biggest draw is its proximity to the water. There’s a public boat ramp, a park, and a walking path along the river.” The community is mostly residential, offering a range of homes from expansive waterfront estates to modest bungalows. The Golden Isles’ beaches are within 30 minutes, and the commercial districts of Brunswick are a 15-minute drive.
Nearby parks give access to rivers and beaches
The 1,100-acre Blythe Island Regional Park is a popular campground with a playground and freshwater lake for swimming and fishing. The public marina here gives boaters and kayakers access to the South Brunswick River. The park also has an unusual resident: domestic rabbits. They freely roam the area and happily accept carrots and rabbit food from visitors. Turtle River Park also has boat ramps, a playground and a fishing pier. Jekyll Island is 18 miles away and has beach access, a water park and the public Jekyll Island Golf Club. Like the rest of southern Georgia, summers here can be hot. “The humidity is enough to make you melt by opening the front door,” Cohrs says. “After a time, you just get used to it, or you find other things to do during the day from June through September.” When it’s too hot to be outside, locals can head to Glynn Place Cinemas nearby.
Waterfront and inland properties that blend into the landscape
Blythe Island’s homes typically sit far from the street behind palm trees and live oaks draped in Spanish moss. Some of the houses were built as early as the 1950s, and new construction homes are also available. Ranch-style houses and bungalows are in the island’s interior, where prices generally range from around $275,000 to $510,000, though fixer-uppers can cost between $130,000 to $300,000.
Waterfront homes often have Lowcountry architecture, and some have gated driveways. Multi-story waterfront houses and properties with multiple acres can range from around $500,000 to $1.1 million, though a waterfront property with two homes on 10 acres was recently listed for around $2 million. Undeveloped lots range from $25,000 to $65,000 for an inland lot, while waterfront lots can go for $85,000 to $170,000. The overall CAP Index crime score is 1 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.
Restaurants and entertainment are a short drive away in Brunswick
The Friendly Express, a gas station that offers takeout Hunt Brothers Pizza, is the only business on Blythe Island. Nearby grocery stores include Winn-Dixie and Dollar General. For more amenities, residents will have to drive into Brunswick. “They just rehabbed the downtown area, so there's a lot of really cool restaurants, local breweries and a rum distillery,” Cohrs says. Indigo Coastal Shanty offers Caribbean fusion food in a casual atmosphere. Willie’s Wee-Nee Wagon has been a Brunswick mainstay since 1975, known for loaded hot dogs and pork chop sandwiches. Each spring, CoastFest in downtown Brunswick celebrates the area’s natural resources and history with interactive animal exhibits, a shrimp eating contest and cannon firing demonstrations.
Glynn Academy offers a range of sports and clubs
Kids can start school at Satilla Marsh Elementary, which earns an A-minus from Niche, and then attend the B-plus-rated Risley Middle. At the A-rated Glynn Academy, high schoolers can join over 15 sports teams, including boys' and girls' golf; both teams won the state championship in 2023. Kids here can also get involved in over 30 student clubs, including the Nature Journaling Club, Knit Witty and Future Farmers of America.
One road on and off the island, Interstate 95 is nearby
State Route 303, also called Blythe Island Highway, is the only route on and off the island, and it leads about 7 miles to downtown Brunswick. Though Interstate 95 passes through the community, the nearest on-ramps are about 5 miles away. “Jacksonville and Savannah are about an hour in either direction,” Cohrs says.
Sidewalks and walking paths make it easy to get around the island, but residents will have to drive to amenities. Houses of worship here include Blythe Island Baptist Church and Grace Community Church. Southeast Georgia Health System’s Brunswick Campus is about 7 miles away, and Brunswick Golden Isles Airport, which has flights to Hartfield Jackson International Airport in Atlanta, is a 9-mile trip.
Flooding and hurricane risk throughout Glynn County
“Glynn County in its entirety is a flood zone,” Cohrs says. “It just depends on where you’re at whether or not flood insurance is a requirement.” Homeowners in FEMA-designated Special Flood Hazard Areas will have to buy flood insurance and get special permits for construction projects. The community is also at risk for hurricanes. Though hurricanes rarely make landfall in Georgia, storms that pass nearby can cause wind damage, power outages and storm surge flooding. “Blythe Island is not a barrier island, so it's more protected,” Cohrs says.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
