There are two distinct home choices in the Prairie Park—Lake County neighborhood, north of the Chicago suburb of Buffalo Grove and just east of Long Grove. Homes on lots as big as 2 acres have a Long Grove address, while homes on smaller lots built closer together have a Buffalo Grove address. “They all feed into Stevenson High School, which is one of the best schools in the area, and that’s the appeal of living in this area,” says Marilyn Merrifield, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty. “The village of Long Grove allows more acreage, whereas with Buffalo Grove, you don’t see homes more than half an acre.”

Prairie Park – Lake County students attend A-rated schools
It’s common for suburban Chicago schools to have elementary and middle schools in separate districts from the high school. The Kildeer Community Consolidated School District 96 has two A-rated schools that neighborhood kids could attend. According to Niche, Prairie Elementary is ranked the sixth-best elementary school in Lake County out of more than 100. The school gets an A grade. Twin Groves Middle also gets an A. Adlai E. Stevenson High School is part of the Stevenson High School District and is rated the best public school district in the country out of nearly 11,000. The school gets an A-plus and is one of the few schools in the country to receive the United States Department of Education’s “Excellence in Education” Blue Ribbon Award five times. Yachad Kids Academy is a daycare in the neighborhood that accepts kids as young as 15 months.
Prairie Elementary is ranked the 6th best elementary school in Lake County out of more than 10.
Twin Groves Middle School has has 622 students and overall A score on Niche.
Stevenson High School has won the U.S. Department of Education’s Blue Ribbon Award five times.

Million dollar homes with a Long Grove address
In the northwest part of the neighborhood, a group of homes were built in the 1990s and early 2000s on 2-acre lots. These sprawling contemporary estates are priced between $850,000 and $1.5 million. An older brick ranch or farmhouse on a lot up to 5 acres ranges from $600,000 to just over $1 million. The homes on large lots have a Long Grove address. Homes that are built closer together have a Buffalo Grove address. Colonial Revival and split-level have a price tag of $430,000 to $700,000. Condos with a $250 monthly fee are priced from $190,000 to $300,000. Townhouses have a range of $200,000 and $400,000. The neighborhood has a CAP crime score index of 1, lower than the national average of 4.

Rick Drazner Park
Recreation opportunities are plenty in the neighborhood. Kerdigan Field is a baseball field located at Rick Drazner Park. It’s fully accessible with wheelchair ramps and specially designed for those using walkers or crutches. There’s also a disc golf course and bocce and pickleball courts. Martha Weiss Park is a small facility west of Prairie Elementary School. A Little Free Library invites folks to take a book or leave one for the community. There’s a playground and a walking trail within the space. Green Lake Park was renamed to the east of the neighborhood in 2023 in honor of longtime Buffalo Grove Park District Commissioner Dr. Larry Reiner. Fishing is allowed in Green Lake and there’s a large open space along with tennis and basketball courts.
Families love the playground at Martha Weiss Park.
There are beautiful pickleball courts at Rick Drazner Park.

Valentino Vineyards & Winery
Across Aptakisic Road is the 20-acre Valentino Vineyards & Winery, which produces over 20 varieties of wine from grapes harvested on-site. The tasting room is open Fridays through Sundays from May through December and by appointment on all other days. To the west is the village of Long Grove, which includes businesses like The Village Tavern, which opened in 1847 and is the oldest restaurant in continuous operation in Illinois. One of the antiques inside is a grandfather clock from the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. Downtown Long Grove is also home to the Sock Monkey Museum, with two floors of over 2,000 handmade creations. The history of Sock Monkeys originates in Rockford, Illinois, 75 miles to the west. Grocery trips are just to the west of the neighborhood at Sunset Foods.

Transportation around the area and into downtown Chicago
The public transportation system in the area is the Pace suburban bus line, but the closest stop is about 3 miles east in Lincolnshire. While there are walking trails in portions of the neighborhood, The Walk Score website gives Prairie Park – Lake County a 42 score, which means a car is necessary to get around. It’s about 2 miles to the south to get to the Buffalo Grove Metra station. The ride into downtown Chicago takes about an hour. Chicago O’Hare International Airport is a half hour to the south via Interstate 94, with an interchange about 6 miles east.
