A leafy, midcentury suburb in the hills of Burlingame
In Mills Estates, spacious homes surrounded by greenery look out from the Burlingame hills towards the San Francisco Bay. This suburb at the edge of the city is known for its larger-than-usual lot sizes compared to the rest of Burlingame. “People are really drawn to the neighborhood for the extra space and the views,” says Realtor Jacklyn Friedland of Compass Realty, a longtime area real estate agent who used to live in the neighborhood. "We had a big backyard for our dogs and three kids." The location is also a perk — it’s zoned for a highly rated school district and backs up to a major Bay Area freeway for those commuting to San Francisco and Silicon Valley.
Joseph Eichler's famous midcentury modern homes
Mills Estates offers a mix of ranch-style and midcentury modern homes built in the 1950s, 60s and 70s. Some were designed by famed architect Joseph Eichler, a pioneer of the midcentury modern style. Lot sizes are typically around a quarter-acre, so there’s plenty of room for pools, patios and landscaping. Adam Dobrinich, a Realtor with eXp Realty who has sold numerous homes in the area, says that while the surrounding area sees a decent number of remodels, Mills Estates attracts buyers looking for turnkey properties. “It’s highly sought after, and it’s definitely a higher price point than most of the city,” he says, noting that homes here generally sell between $2.5 million and $4 million.
Some of Mills Estates' mid-century homes have a contemporary flair.
