Suburban Neighborhood in Burlington City, New Jersey
Burlington County 08022, 08505
Located off the New Jersey Turnpike in South Jersey’s Mansfield Township, the small neighborhood of Columbus is a hidden gem of the Delaware Valley. This mostly rural community offers residents a scenic countryside living experience, complete with a regionally famous farmers’ market, flea market, and Amish bake shop. Sitting just 30 minutes outside Philadelphia, Columbus positions commuters well for easy trips into the city and a quiet country home to return to.
Columbus’ history dates to the dawn of American independence, when the town was called “Black Horse” after a local tavern. Black Horse very nearly became the county seat in 1795, and it assumed its present name in 1827. Though Columbus has lost out on access both to the seat of government and to Route 206, which relocated during the 1960s, this isolation has helped to preserve Columbus’ small-town charm and spacious feel. Its rural lanes are lined with colonial-style homes, many of which date to the early decades of the 20th century. These homes vary in price from $270,000 to $400,000, making Columbus one of South Jersey’s least expensive communities, reflecting its rurality and its older construction, and inviting further growth.
While Columbus may be located in one of the most rural parts of the state, it famous for miles around for its local traditions. Among these is the legendary rivalry between Kate & Al’s Pizza and Pete’s Old Fashion Tomato Pies, both of which are in the same shopping center. These two pizzerias have battled each other for years in a friendly competition involving Pete’s tomato sauce-covered focaccia and Kate & Al’s trademark combination of Sicilian and grandma pizzas for their signature pie. Both restaurants are locally treasured, as are the equally famous shops next to them.
Within that same plaza, the Columbus Flea Market – dating back to 1919, when it was originally an auction yard for livestock – offers fruits, vegetables, and an outdoor flea market in an indoor-outdoor setting. The flea market is famous for its food vendors and other stores, such as seafood stalls, bakery sections, and even clothing and jewelry bazaars. A South Jersey flea market would not be complete without an Amish bakery, and Amish vendors sell delicious pastries from cinnamon sticks to apple wraps and Amish donuts, freshly made pies, and even handmade wooden birdhouses from their shop. This part of town is the heart of this pastoral community, and people from Philadelphia to Pemberton know about Columbus’ pizza scene and market culture.
Columbus’ rustic setting makes for picturesque strolls, such as the Kinkora Trail, which sits beside the former Kinkora Railroad and leads to the banks of the Delaware. Crystal Lake Park, bordering Columbus, is another favorite for forested treks, as well as fishing, horseback riding, and bird watching.
Columbus’ students attend John Hydock Elementary School, Mansfield Township Elementary School, and Northern Burlington County Regional High School. The local high school has consistently ranked among the upper sixth of New Jersey’s public high schools, while also boasting 50 extracurricular clubs and strong athletics.
Philadelphia-bound commuters have easy access to the New Jersey Turnpike as well as local highways, ensuring that trips into the city are a matter of around 30 minutes.
If you are looking for country living, an easy commute into Philadelphia, strong public schools, and amazing pizza, Columbus may be for you.
