Life on Browns Lake
Lakeside communities surround Burlington, Wisconsin, but Browns Lake is one of the area’s most popular. The lake’s southeast shores feature a public beach, and the lake is a hotspot for boating, fishing and water skiing. Around the lake, restaurants and shops provide residents with spots to wind down after a day on the water, and downtown Burlington, located just a couple of miles west, is home to a larger selection of restaurants, seasonal events and other attractions. “It’s a really nice inland lake with great neighborhoods and great water quality,” says Joe Busch, Broker/Realtor with Bear Realty.
Forty miles southwest of downtown Milwaukee, Browns Lake is a scenic lakeside community.

Lakeside Fischer Park
Browns Lake is an all-sport lake, Busch says. The lake's 397 acres are accessible to anglers, boaters, water skiers and those seeking recreation in the colder months as well. “In the winter, if there’s good ice on the lake—which there typically is—there’s a lot of activity,” Busch says. From snowshoeing, ice skiing and ice fishing to just walking on the frozen lake, Browns Lake keeps residents active year-round. Along the lake's southeast shores, Fischer Park spans 53 acres. The park has a small public beach with a dock, boat landing, picnic tables and grills. Admission is $3 but free to children under 6 and adults over 62. To the west of the lake, Browns Lake Golf Course, which opened in 1926, holds more than 6,000 yards of contoured greens and fairways.

Plenty of options for condos and single-family homes
Busch, who has sold homes in the area for 31 years, says there are three condo projects around the lake, the newest of which was built between 2005 and 2010. The older two were hotel-style resorts and date back to the 1960s and 70s, but have since been converted into single-owner units on the water. Condos typically sell between $130,000 and $230,000. The area holds a stock of single-family homes in addition to its condos. Ranch-style homes and traditional two-stories are popular on lots set away from the water, ranging from $200,000 to $400,000. Home styles along Browns Lake's banks tend toward traditional architecture or modern cabins. These larger homes with waterfront access range from $700,000 to $2.6 million.

Waterfront dining and a local dive
On Weiler Road, The Waterfront on Brown’s Lake lakefront dining gives diners waterside vistas of the lake’s southwest bank. Across Durand Avenue from Fischer Park, Beachview Motel, a local watering hole, sports a cozy, beachside atmosphere with cold pints and pub fare. North of the lake, on Milwaukee Avenue, residents can stop at Menards and stock up on fresh produce and other necessities. Browns Lake Super Stables sells antiques and collectibles on Cedar Drive, just north of the lake. When residents want a wider selection of shops to peruse and restaurants to dine, downtown Burlington is less than 2 miles west.

The Saturday closest to July 4th is a big day of celebration in Browns Lake, according to Busch. The Browns Lake Venetian Fest is marked with a fireworks show, a performance by the Aquaducks—a youth water skiing team—live music and a collection of local food trucks. Celebrations take place at Fischer Beach Park and attract residents from all over the area. For more regular events, residents can join the Browns Lake Yacht Club, which hosts popular social gatherings throughout the year. “There’s probably a hundred or so people there,” Busch says.
