The Richest Hill on Earth
Nicknamed “the Richest Hill on Earth,” Butte served as the heart of the gold and silver mining industry in the 1800s, and later, the American copper boom. The promise of jobs and wealth attracted mining workers to the area from across the globe, and Uptown was where they, and the wealthy businessmen known as the Copper Kings, lived. Today, the neighborhood’s century-old history is still reflected in its homes. “I think what drives many people is the historic properties you find there,” says Jennifer Plute, broker with Fort and Home Realty. “We have quite a few of the true craftsman bungalows; some of the properties date to the 1900s and 1920s.” Residents here are also near locally owned restaurants, retail establishments, museums and old mining sites.
Variety of styles from the late 1800s to 1920s
Back in the mining days, workers lived in Uptown houses and walked to work. Most of these homes maintain their original Victorian or Romanesque facades but have modern upgrades. “Every home is different and has a uniqueness to it,” Plute says. “While they have updated, they’ve kept their original charm; you can see the light fixtures, the stained pictures and the brass metals since there weren’t other metals back then.” When built, Uptown homes came with sheds meant for horses and carriages. Nowadays, those sheds wouldn’t fit a car, so it’s common for people to park on the street. Since Uptown is on a hill, it’s not the easiest area to walk around, especially during wintertime. Prices range from $90,000 for a duplex or fixer-upper to $550,000 for a large Italianate home or craftsman bungalow. Some renovated homes spanning more than 5,000 square feet can cost up to $800,000. This neighborhood received a 6 out of 10 CAP Index crime score, two points higher than the national average.

Hikers and bikers can trek on a variety of trails or, when snow falls, people sled down the hill. “We’re in the Rocky Mountains, so you can travel within ten minutes to reach any hiking trail,” Plute says. “You’re there in ten minutes for hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation.” BA&P Hill Trail is meant to challenge bikers and hikers with its 4 miles of paved and dirt pathways.

Landmarks and museums are situated throughout most of Uptown, including the Original Mine, where copper and silver were produced more than a century ago. The An Ri Ra Festival celebrates Irish Catholic culture with dancing, performers and food.
William Clark, one of Butte’s three “Copper Kings,” established the Original Mine in 1878. Clark owned a mansion south of the mine on Granite Avenue, a large Victorian and Queen Anne structure that’s now a bed and breakfast. The Covellite Theatre and Uptown Lounge is a former church turned entertainment area with 500 upper and ground-level seats. Today, it hosts weekly performances, musicians and plays. Dumas Brothel was the longest-running brothel in the country until it shut down in 1982. Now, it offers public tours and paranormal events on selected occasions.
