Close-knit community suburb south of Chicago
Residents driving into Calumet Park are greeted by a welcome sign saying, “the place to be,” which is true to its lively community that makes the small village feel big. Less than 18 miles southwest of downtown Chicago, Calumet Park is a mostly suburban neighborhood that has city benefits and comfortable homes. “People here like the fact they’re outside of the city but still have immediate access. They feel they’re still part of Chicago,” says local Realtor John Nugent with Coldwell Banker Realty, who has over 20 years of experience. “The town holds its own.” On warm sunny days, there are a couple of local parks for the community to get together at for events and picnics.

Older brick homes in many styles
Most homes in Calumet Park are from the post-war era of the 1950s and cost less than those in the neighboring communities. Brick Cape Cods and Chicago-classic bungalows line the densely gridded streets and make up most of the housing types. These smaller homes are typically 850 to 1,500 square feet and cost anywhere between $150,000 and $225,000. Two-story homes are scattered throughout, with Georgian-inspired architecture and some American foursquares that go for $200,000 to $260,000. Most properties have connecting sidewalks but no driveways for vehicles.

Veteran’s Park and other outdoor amenities
Calumet Park’s biggest area of green space is the Cedar Park Cemetery. However, Veterans Park is a small community park in the northwest corner of the neighborhood by the train tracks that is adored by residents. Children can explore the playground or practice sports on the large grassy field. “There’s an overhead canopy for families to bring their loved ones and friends to have some warm weather fun. You can also pop up a tent on the fields for barbequing and use the grills,” says Jonathan Shaw, the Director of Parks and Recreation for Calumet Park. “The park is a great meeting place for all the residents who want to come and have outdoor fun or put on events.” Additionally, many residents will walk a couple of blocks over to West Pullman Park. The space offers sports fields, tennis and basketball courts, plus an indoor facility with a public pool. Those willing to cross the bridge over the Little Calumet River can enter the Whistler Woods Forest Preserve and enjoy its biking and walking trails through old oak trees.

Commercial businesses along the main roads
Since most of the village’s makeup is house-lined streets, residents head to the main roads to find retail and restaurants. There are everyday necessity shops along West 127th Street, including fast food, hardware stores and banks. Residents can start the day at Egg Shack, a family-run diner that dishes out breakfast favorites. There are also several bars and grills in the area, like Geno’s Place in the Park, which serves classic soul food and cocktails. Further south in the neighborhood along Vermont Street, there’s an Aldi and Walgreens for essentials.
There are several stand alone stores and a strip mall along 127th street in Calumet Park.

Quality education in Calumet Park
Calumet Public School District No. 132 is small but reliable, serving the younger children living in the neighborhood. Burr Oak Academy and Burr Oak Elementary tackle kindergarten through fifth grade together. The Academy maintains a B grade from Niche, while the elementary school has a C-plus – both offer after-school enrichment programs. From there, students can attend Calumet Middle School with its C Niche grade. Teenagers will travel outside of Calumet Park for high school, attending either Dwight Eisenhower High School with its B-minus Niche grade or Harold L. Richards High School with its B-plus. Both offer an Educational Technology program and over 30 student clubs and activities.
Burr Oak Elementary is a public school serving children from Calumet Park.
Calumet Middle School in Calumet Park has a great facility for its students.

Buses, trains and highway systems
Getting around Calumet Park is easy. The village is very walkable, with sidewalks on every street. There are also six bus lines with fixed stops along most main roads as part of Chicago's suburban Pace system. Ashland Avenue is a commuter rail station located in Calumet Park that can connect people to the Metra Electric line. The Burr Oak and Racine Metra stations are also within a mile of the neighborhood. Those who prefer driving around can take Interstate 57 and travel all the way into Downtown Chicago.

It is dangerous in this neighborhood and the kids cannot play in the parks because of gang shooting. Police are trying to keep violence out of the park but it's tough on them.

My community is different but quiet nothing really happens. Lots of places around to find a job. One thing sense it's a lot of places around their is a lot of traffic around day and night. But overall a good community to be in to grow a family and live life.
