The Parkside area is the best place to go if you want to see one of Camden's largest parks. Overlooking the Interstate 676 and Route 30 gateway intersection, Parkside is located along the Cooper River and features a tranquil city area bordering the riverside Farnham Park. Parkside is far more natural, with acres of mostly untouched open space and marshland than the city's highly industrialized Central Waterfront District across the Delaware River from Philadelphia. "A lot of people use it, mostly people from outside the area who come during the day on weekends," remarks Tito Santiago, a Realtor with Garden State Properties Group, who works in the neighboring town of Merchantville.

Recovering from urban decay
Like many other neighborhoods in Camden, Parkside is beset by urban deterioration. The community's economic prospects are negatively impacted by a few run-down and abandoned properties. “The neighborhood is in transition,” says David Beach of RE/MAX Community-Williamstown. “The draw is affordable and suitable housing options.” Nevertheless, the neighborhood's collection of row houses and twins averages roughly $108,000, so home sales here are comparable to those throughout the city. Prices average between $70,000 and $250,000. The community feels close-knit because of the tightly packed houses in a grid arrangement next to one another. Young children in the neighborhood walk to school. Despite being mostly residential, people can stroll to nearby shops and restaurants. The CAP Index crime score for the area is a 7 out of 10, which is higher than the national average of 4.

Rutgers has a large presence
Students from nearby public schools, Camden High School and Forest Hill Family School, are a part of the Camden City School system. Both schools have a C-minus Niche grade. The Big Picture Learning Academy, Brimm Medical Arts High School, and Creative Arts Academy are three unique district programs housed on the high school site, which was rebuilt a few years ago. Camden is also home to Rutgers-Camden and the community shares a strong relationship with the school. “At the core of our university's identity is a commitment to giving back to the community we're proud to call home. Our nationally recognized outreach programs partner with the Camden community and organizations from around the region to make a real difference in the lives of those who need it most,” says Caroline Brobeil, senior public relations specialist. “Working with local partners, we support efforts to meet the challenges facing our city, county, and region through engaged civic learning, volunteerism and service, community-based research and integrated partnerships.”
Visit a park on the banks of the Cooper River
Encircled by trees close to the Cooper River's edge, families congregate in Farnham Park to walk the paved, tree-lined trails that extend over the canal or bring their children to the playground. After crossing the river, proceed along parallel roads to the Camden County Driving Range. Here, visitors may purchase a bucket of balls for $10 and work on your backswing and other strategies to be the best player on the course the next time you play. You won't have to shout "fore!" because the range faces the water.
Donkey's cheesesteak are "superior"
Many eateries and retail establishments along Haddon Avenue cater to the daily requirements of the locals. The Bell Rexall Pharmacy, which was founded in the 1930s, is still in operation today and offers prescription drugs and other necessities at its corner location. Its building is adorned with a distinctive orange and blue flag. Donkey's Place has also been a longstanding neighborhood staple down the street, challenging even Philadelphia's most well-known cheesesteak purveyors for the title of Best Philly Cheesesteak. Though everyone is free to have their own opinions, the late famous chef and author Anthony Bourdain said that Donkey's version of the cheesesteak, served with a circular Kaiser roll topped with poppy seeds and white American cheese, "might well" be better. Beyond its well-known cheesesteaks, Donkey's is a local tavern with a touch of nostalgia. It's the kind of place where residents go to enjoy a beer and some food at the bar, where wood-paneled walls are mostly concealed by colorful trinkets, vintage photographs, and novelty t-shirts.
The Ben Franklin Bridge is close by
The historic Benjamin Franklin Bridge, which is visible from the riverfront, connects motor vehicles, trains, walkers, and cyclists to Philadelphia, making it easy for people to access to the city's businesses, restaurants, and other attractions. Whether you drive or prefer public transportation, it is a convenient option.
