Convenience in Fairmount

Located in Onondaga County and 6 miles from Downtown Syracuse, Fairmount is a large hamlet in Camillus that was once part of the Onondaga Reservation. McKenzie Kelly can sum up the upstate New York suburb of Fairmount with ease: “It’s a desirable area with a highly-rated school system. The neighborhood is close to a lot of parks, restaurants and stores. And Syracuse generally is a really pretty, peaceful place to live,” says Kelly, a local Realtor with EXP Realty who has served the area for 12 years. Most of the community has quiet residential streets, with Genesee Street as the main commercial corridor. Apart from its sought-after school district, Fairmount residents enjoy a CAP Index crime score of 2 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4. With miles of nature trails, nearby state parks, and endless entertainment along the shores of Onondaga Lake, Fairmount’s proximity to the great outdoors is one of its biggest draws.

Playdates at Shove Park

At Shove Park, children can choose from three play areas or run around the open field. There are also athletic fields for youth sports programs and pavilions with picnic tables. Wooded trails await, with a winding stream where kids can cool off on a hot summer day. Depending on rainfall, the dripping sounds of a small waterfall add to its serene surroundings. Shove Park is also home to an indoor ice rink. About 5 miles away, Erie Canal Park offers scenic waterfront paths along the Empire State Trail, which runs through Downtown Syracuse and intersects with the Erie Canalway Trail. “It’s popular for hiking in the area,” Kelly says. Locals can also explore the shores of Onondaga Lake, with amenities like pickleball courts, walking paths and a marina and boat launch.

Micron brings new jobs

Fairmount residents are just minutes from state parks with swimmable lakes and walking trails. “We have so many lakes that supply clean water; that’s why Micron is coming here,” Li says. “Syracuse is going to transform into the Silicon Valley of the East.” Micron is one of the largest semiconductor companies across the globe and is the only manufacturer of memory chips in the nation. Development plans span over two decades, and 2028 is the first projected completion date for one of four manufacturing plants. Micron’s presence will provide nearly 50,000 new jobs, offering new and exciting economic opportunities for Upstate New York residents.

Starter homes on quiet streets

Fairmount properties are arranged along residential roads canopied by maple and oak trees. Many homeowners have small front yards, with neat landscaping and wide driveways, but do have larger fenced-in backyards. “There are a lot of starter homes that tend to be a little older,” Kelly says. Most structures date to the 1950s, with Cape Cods, Colonial Revivals, split-levels and ranch-style houses scattered throughout. Prices typically range from the low $100,000s to the upper $200,000s for modest homes, while larger colonials are priced from the upper $200,000s to the upper $300,000s. With an average snowfall of around 114 inches per year, residents should be ready to brave snowy roads and frigid conditions from December to March. Syracuse’s Department of Public Works clears the roads and over 100 miles of heavily trafficked sidewalks, but residents are responsible for clearing walkways in front of their homes.

Restaurants and retailers on Genesee Street

A major retail shopping center sits along West Genesee Street in the northeastern portion of Fairmount. Locals can grab weekly groceries at Wegmans on the eastern side of the hamlet or seasonal produce at the Camillus Farmers Market at the Town Court. Li notes that Wegman’s even sources their produce from local farmers around the region. Target, HomeGoods, and Costco Wholesale are also only 2 miles away. Camillus Commons sits on the western side of Fairmount, featuring retailers like Walmart Supercenter and Lowe’s Home Improvement. Popular chains intermingle with locally owned businesses, like Casa Del Pane, an Italian bakery that sells rolls, cookies and handmade dough. Nestico’s Too attracts brunch-goers for classic American fare. CopperTop Tavern Camillus is a highly-rated restaurant with an extensive menu that ranges from tacos to lobster mac and cheese.

Summer days at the New York State Fair

There are both local community events and city attractions nearby. The Fairmount Community Library hosts book clubs, Spanish classes, STEM exploration stations and preschool story times. The town of Camillus organizes events and activities like a visit with Santa, a holiday lights contest, yoga classes and summer concerts. Just 4 miles away is the New York State Fairgrounds. This annual event runs for 13 days from the end of August to the start of September, offering an ultimate end-of-the-summer sendoff. The fair run for The Toyota Coliseum also sits on the fairgrounds, hosting annual ice hockey games, events and over two dozen regional horse shows. Across Interstate 690, Empower FCU Amphitheater at Lakeview features many world-renowned artists in an open-air concert venue, while Downtown Syracuse offers even more entertainment and festivities.

6 miles to Downtown Syracuse

The Central New York Regional Transportation Authority, or Centro, operates bus routes throughout Syracuse. Bus stops are available along Genesee Street and Onondaga Road, the two main thoroughfares in the community. There are limited sidewalks along residential streets, and most locals depend on their vehicles to commute to work. Upstate Community Hospital is about 5 miles southwest, and locals can take either Interstate 690 or 81 to make the 9-mile trip northeast to Syracuse Hancock International Airport. Other significant roads include New York State Highway 5 and Interstate 90.
