Kathy Binner’s bed and breakfast, The Carraway Guest House, hosts travelers from around the world in the bedroom community of Canal Winchester. “Columbus is a huge crossroads of the Midwest,” she says. “Travelers want a walkable area to stay, and we’re walkable. We have hiking and biking paths, a world-renowned resident artist – Robert Warren – restaurants, microbreweries, gift shops, antique shops, sidewalk cafes and live music. It’s just a good array of everything.”
100 years of brunch at Canal Wigwam
Local businesses and walkability are a huge draw to the area. BrewDog Columbus is a Scottish craft brewery and taproom with massive murals, an arcade and classic American grub. “We have the only American location right here! They create a nice arrangement of flavors, brew it right here in Canal Winchester and ship it across the U.S. to little pubs.” Meanwhile, Canal Wigwam has been open since 1899, a family-owned brunch joint with new specials daily. As for commercial shopping, Waterloo Crossing offers a Walmart Supercenter, Walgreens and Aldi across the street. Winchester Square has a Kroger and Home Depot. And an array of antique shops can be found along Waterloo Street downtown.

Ribs, music and parades with a historic downtown backdrop
Each spring, Canal Winchester’s Art Stroll displays various artists’ work throughout the downtown area. The farmer’s market lasts all summer alongside Music in the Park, a summer concert series bringing local musicians and food trucks to Stradley Park each week. The Blues & Ribfest is a street celebration with blues for days and world-class ribs. Since the 1920s, the Labor Day Festival has attracted more than 30,000 visitors yearly. The celebration lasts from Saturday to Monday, with a parade, carnival rides and more. But any day of the year, guests can browse the National Barber Museum & Hall of Fame or check out events hosted by the City of Canal Winchester Community Center.
New builds and older homes
Despite the area's historic roots, the city’s subdivisions are typically only a few decades old. The Villages at Westchester display Craftsman homes and colonial revivals built in the early 2000s. Cherry Landing boasts even newer Cape Cods with two-car garages, front porches and neat lawns. But northern Winchester Village diverges with ranch-style homes and split levels built in the 70s. Residents will undoubtedly stumble upon older properties in subdivisions like this one, where mature trees yield to the historic downtown scene. Most homes are priced between $350,000 to $550,000, but the average listing price hovers around $400,000.
