A rustic, country town on the outskirts of Concord

About 10 miles north of Concord, Canterbury consists of a rural landscape with a small-town center. “It’s the quintessential historic New England town,” says Realtor Diane Jousset with Better Homes and Gardens’ Masiello Group, who has 24 years of experience in the area.“It’s quaint, quiet and has a country feel.” While residents agree that Canterbury’s major draw is its secluded, private atmosphere, most people know the town for its Shaker village. From 1792 to 1992, a religious group called the Shakers settled into Canterbury’s forested valleys. Now a museum, the village is one of the most authentic and well-preserved examples of its kind, featuring 25 original buildings from the 18th century. The attraction brings in tens of thousands of visitors each year and has become a staple of Canterbury’s history and reputation today.

Learning about the Shakers and attending a NASCAR race

The Canterbury Community Farmers Market operates on Wednesdays from June through October and features live music, food and regional vendors. On the last Saturday of July, residents gather for the Canterbury Fair, renowned for its chicken barbecue, live music, children’s games, vendors and a 5K race. The Canterbury Shaker Village not only offers tours of the grounds and self-guided nature trails, but it also holds plenty of events, including concerts, specialized exhibitions like a deep dive into Shaker ingenuity and even a birthday party for Mother Ann Lee, the village’s founder. Just outside of Canterbury, the New Hampshire Motor Speedway hosts NASCAR races that bring in fans from all over New England. The track also has other events, like charity races, lessons and ride-alongs.

The Canterbury Country Store anchors the town

Despite Canterbury’s rural nature, it has a few dining and shopping staples. The Canterbury Country Store is off Center Road, next to the town hall and community center. Here, shoppers can pick up everyday essentials and crafts, send mail from the post office or enjoy the art gallery and prepared foods in the indoor seating area. The store is a central gathering space where residents can socialize with their neighbors. “There’s a very close-knit community here that’s very friendly,” Jousset says. Hackleboro Orchard also provides produce and hosts pick-your-own fruit sessions. Open on the weekends, Canterbury Aleworks has an outdoor patio where patrons can enjoy a beer in an Adirondack chair at a whiskey-barrel table. Another Canterbury favorite, Fox Country Smoke House prepares smoked products including meats, cheeses and salmon. For a big grocery run, Market Basket is within 5 miles, while Walmart and Target sit about 13 miles away in Concord.

Hiking the Hutchins Forest and floating down the Merrimack

From Canterbury’s central location in the middle of New Hampshire, residents can hit the beaches along the coast, drive north to the Lakes Region or head to the White Mountains with relative ease. The Merrimack River allows for fishing, boating and swimming at different access points. Paddlers and anglers also frequent smaller bodies of water nearby, including Horseshoe, Crane Neck and New ponds. Miles of hiking trails meander through Canterbury’s many conservation areas, with some of the most popular paths found at Hutchins Forest and Shaker State Forest. The Sno-Shakers Snowmobile Club grooms and utilizes the town’s trails for snowmobiling and cross-country skiing during the long New England winters. For some friendly competition, locals can visit the Top O’ The Hill disc golf course or try the 18-hole layout at Canterbury Woods Country Club.

Distinctive New England architecture on sprawling plots

Many residential lots sit atop numerous acres with enough space to build a barn or extra guest house. Two-to-four-bedroom colonials and Capes dominate the housing market and most often sell between $400,000 and $650,000. Buyers can choose from a variety of landscapes, from waterfront views of the area’s many ponds to acres of fields overlooking the mountains. Houses are often tucked away from the winding country roads and hidden behind towering trees. With no sidewalks, the town is very car dependent and provides a sense of privacy from neighboring properties.

Public and private education for Canterbury students

Children can attend public schools in the Shaker Regional District, beginning at Canterbury Elementary, which earns a B grade on Niche. The school’s active parent-teacher organization hosts fundraisers for improvements to school amenities, including a refresh of the campus’ outdoor basketball courts. Belmont Middle and High schools both score C-plus grades and sit about 12 miles away. Families can also opt for private education for prekindergarten through eighth grade at Shaker Road School, about 8 miles away in Concord.

I-93 is Canterbury’s main thoroughfare

When it comes to transportation, Jousset says, “It’s all country roads, no traffic and no public transit.” With no sidewalks, either, the town is very car-dependent. Interstate 93 runs along the town’s western edge, serving as a commuter route for Canterbury residents who work in Concord. About 34 miles away, Manchester-Boston Regional Airport provides nonstop flights to major cities, including Philadelphia and Washington, D.C.
