At the foot of the Blue Hills is the town of Canton, Massachusetts. With open acres of nature stretching out in all directions, residents can spend their free time skiing, swimming in Reservoir Pond or hiking to scenic overlooks. Beyond the outdoor activities, they can explore the town’s restaurants, shops, museums and community events. With Boston about 20 miles north, Canton serves as a bedroom community for those wishing to escape the hustle of city life.
Canton's natural splendor
In Canton, there are numerous recreational spaces and nature spots. One of the largest is the Blue Hills Ski Area, where the resort works hard to keep the area snowy and ski-ready all winter long. The Blue Hills Reservation has 7,000 acres open for hiking, mountain biking, canoeing and more. The town also has golf courses and country clubs for those who prefer to hit the greens rather than the slopes or the trails. In the warmer months, kayakers can launch from their docks along Reservoir Pond or head to the Earl Newhouse Waterfront, where there's a public launch for small boats. The gardens at Bradley Estate are a popular spot for relaxing strolls and picnics.
Trillium Brewing Company and some chain retail
The town is home to several restaurants and bars, including Trillium Brewing Company, which adds rustic New England touches to a modern brewery experience. The brewery boasts a 500-seat taproom, beer garden and a wood-fired eatery, and has even been featured in Boston Magazine. When residents need to do their grocery shopping, there are chains such as Shaw’s and Wegmans. The Village Shoppes is home to a few national retail chains, including a combined Marshalls and Home Goods location, and for other options, locals can drive into the city.
Events at the Canton Public Library
By exploring places like the Mass Audubon Museum of Bird Art and the Blue Hills Trailside Museum, residents can learn about the region's history and vibrancy. The Canton Public Library organizes book clubs, a Library 5K Fun Run and the Open Book Coffeehouse, a series of live music performances.
Saltboxes and Cape Cods in Canton
Canton's median housing price is in the upper $600,000s, which is above the national median. The Summer Heights neighborhood has Cape Cods and Tudors on large lots. Ranch styles and Colonial Revivals are common in Ponkapoag. Memorial Field features cul-de-sacs adorned with plentiful flowers and shrubbery while Washington Street includes colorful houses and the occasional saltbox thrown in. Home prices can start around $230,000 and can go as high as $2.7 million, depending on whether homebuyers are looking for a two-bedroom condo or a five-bedroom home with a view. Over the years, the housing market has experienced some ebbs and flows but there haven't been many drastic changes.
Canton Public Schools

Commuter rail into Boston
Interstates 93 and 95 cross through Canton, allowing for commutes into Boston and Providence, which are around 20 and 33 miles away, respectively. Traffic into Boston can be heavy, especially during rush hour, so some residents opt to take the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority's commuter rail trains to and from work. Private pilots can take off from the Norwood Memorial Airport, less than four miles away, and the Boston Logan International Airport is the closest major hub.
Highway noise and relatively low crime
Some parts of Canton are prone to flooding, while others may experience noise from interstate traffic or passing commuter trains. The community has four seasons, with chilly winters and relatively mild summers.
