Mid-century homes give this Canton suburb a historic touch
On the northeast side of Canton is Colonial Heights, a residential neighborhood known for historic Craftsman houses and mid-century bungalows. “Colonial Heights has unique homes; they’re beautiful and old, in a convenient location close to the highway and downtown Canton,” says Realtor Preston Donahue from Keller Williams Legacy Group Realty. “If you enjoy seeing different kinds of architecture, this is the place.”
Red bricks decorate streets and houses
Some of Colonial Heights’ roads are paved with red brick from the early 1900s, adding historic detail to the streetscape. The roads are lined with an array of Craftsman, Colonial Revival, and ranch-style bungalows built from the 1920s to the 1950s. Single-family homes with three bedrooms range in price from $100,000 to $200,000, while bigger homes on quarter-acre lots are priced between $200,000 and $350,000. “Colonial Heights houses are statelier than houses in surrounding neighborhoods,” says Realtor Mike Boylan from Cutler Realty.
Two school districts serve Colonial Heights
Colonial Heights students may enroll in Canton City School District or Plain Local School District, depending on their address within the neighborhood. A student zoned in Canton City may attend Belle Stone Elementary, graded B-minus by Niche; Crenshaw Middle School, graded C-minus; and McKinley Senior High School, graded C. Students zoned in Plain Local School District may attend Frazer Elementary and Glenwood Intermediate School, both graded A-minus by Niche; and GlenOak High School, graded B. For post-secondary education, students can attend nearby Malone University, a private Christian college that is 1 mile west of Colonial Heights and offers degrees in business, theater, nursing and liberal arts.
Canton’s Parks and Recreation System provides places to play
Robert E. Schreiber Park, on the east side of the neighborhood, is part of Canton’s Parks and Recreation System and offers a playground, a baseball field and tennis courts. The middle branch of Nimishillen Creek runs through the park alongside the Middle Branch Hiking Trail. Bors Field, used by youth baseball leagues, also offers basketball courts and a playground. Nearby, Weis Park has sand volleyball and tennis courts, plus soccer and softball fields. People take their dogs to Nimisilla Park for walks or socialization, and the neighborhood’s paved sidewalks make morning and evening strolls popular.
Nights out are nearby at Gervasi Vineyard
Gervasi Vineyard's resort location, three miles north of Colonial Heights, offers upscale Italian food and wine tastings, while its cigar lounge, live music and culinary lessons offer even more to do. Closer to home, George’s Lounge first opened its doors in 1959, serving classic American dishes like grass-fed beef burgers and milkshakes. Five miles west of the neighborhood is Belden Village Mall, with more than 90 shops and restaurants. Grocery stores close to the area include Giant Eagle Supermarket, Save A Lot, StarkFish Grocery and Marc’s Stores.
First Fridays are a popular night out in downtown Canton
Downtown Canton is home to an array of festivals and events. Every month, residents celebrate First Friday, an evening of free art installations, workshops and live performances alongside food and drinks. “Everyone in Canton goes downtown for the museums, the arts, the music, and to eat and shop,” says Donahue. “Many artists showcase their work at Canton’s art district; it’s a big draw.” Larger events like concerts and live sports broadcasts are hosted at Centennial Plaza.
Home to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Canton takes pride in the legacy and heritage of football. The hall and adjacent football stadium attract thousands of visitors every year. The Hall of Fame Entertainment Company is also expanding its venues—according to Boylan, the company plans to hire 15,000 new employees, becoming the city’s biggest employer. “This is where people in Canton go to get good jobs,” says Boylan.
Getting downtown is easy with SARTA
The local SARTA bus line takes residents throughout Stark County. Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital, a nationally recognized institute, is located 2 miles west of Colonial Heights. U.S. Route 62, Interstate 77 and State Route 43 border the neighborhood, providing quick access to northeast Ohio. For long-distance travel, the Akron-Canton Airport is about 8 miles to the north via I-77.
