Gateway to downtown Carson City with plenty of recreation

Capitol Village is a large neighborhood just south of the block housing Nevada’s branches of government. In addition to acting as a gateway to Carson City’s historic and vibrant downtown, the neighborhood boasts diverse housing communities with convenient access to outdoor amenities. The crack of baseball bats and accompanying cheers emanate from the heart of the neighborhood during the spring, while a city path takes bikers to rides up the scenic, sagebrush-covered hills to the east. “The beautiful thing about that area, or one of them, is you’re within walking distance to downtown Carson City. Ten years ago, it was a whole different deal,” says Chris Griffith, a Realtor with Intero, who adds the Governors Field ballpark is another key asset. “They do a lot of activities at Governors Field.”

Manufactured homes, older ranch-style housing and contemporary additions

The neighborhood is notably home to a gated, 55-plus community called Quail Run. The age-restricted community, which neighbors the ballpark, consists of a mix of manufactured homes on full foundations and conventional single-family homes with stucco exteriors. Additionally, residents there enjoy amenities like a clubhouse and billiards area. “That is for 55 and older only, and it’s the only one in town where you can actually buy your home,” says Kari Breuer, a broker with Dickson Realty.Manufactured homes are common elsewhere. The neighborhood also has new contemporary stick-style homes, while the area near East Fifth Avenue sees ranch-style houses back into groups of tall and mature trees. Costs range from $270,000 for a manufactured home to nearly $650,000 for a new build. Townhouses offer another buying option and run from $345,000 to about $430,000.

A decades-long tradition at the Carson Mall Shopping Center

The more than five-decade-old Carson Mall Shopping Center sits in the northwest corner of the neighborhood and is the state’s first enclosed mall. The center’s staples include Red’s Old 395 Grill, an Old West-themed establishment popular for its barbecue and 19th century decor. Nashville Social Club, which features a mural of the Music City’s famous Broadway strip, offers comfort foods, desserts and live music.More entertainment, shopping and dining are available a few minutes down the road in the commercial district home to the Casino Fandango. The gaming complex’s several restaurants include the elegant Duke’s Steakhouse. “It’s phenomenal. That’s kind of a central hub to that whole area,” Griffith says.

Hiking the Prison Hill area

The Governors Field complex provides multiple baseball diamonds for little league and T-ball games and a small playground. The city’s miles-long California Trail passes through here and provides a connection to the Prison Hill Recreation Area — itself close to the Warm Springs Correctional Center and old Nevada State Prison. An entrance to Prison Hill sits south of East Fifth and leads hikers and dog walkers to overlooks of the surrounding neighborhood. One attraction here is a small monument consisting of circular rows of stones placed around a large pile of rocks. Lifelong city resident Hannah Hardcastle calls Prison Hill “beautiful.” “I like how much desert there is. There’s a lot of land to do whatever you want,” says Hardcastle, also an employee at the neighborhood’s Sierra Le Bone pet store.

Fremont Elementary’s early and strong computer science exposure

The neighborhood is home to Fremont Elementary School, while Eagle Valley Middle School and Carson High School are located right outside the area. All three schools get B grades from Niche. In 2023, nonprofit program CS is Elementary honored Fremont for its computer science learning. Although several other district elementary schools were recognized, they were still among just 160 schools nationwide to receive an award.

Celebrating Mark Twain and Cinco de Mayo

The community is close to several celebrations around downtown Carson City. One growing in popularity is the Mark Twain Days Festival, which occurs over a few days in October and consists of various activities at different venues. The festival’s downtown events include writing workshops at Comma Coffee and the Bow Tie Ball at the city’s Nevada State Museum. The Brewery Arts Center is a local destination for outdoor concerts. The venue hosts the new and local Cinco de Mayo Festival, which includes an art market and tribal dance shows.

Quick access to I-580 travel

Several JAC — Jump Around Carson — bus stops exist in the area. Interstate 580 runs across the eastern side of the neighborhood and goes toward regional neighbor Reno, about 35 miles north. However, the part of the neighborhood around I-580 can experience high noise levels. Travelers going on out-of-state flights go to the Reno-Tahoe International Airport. The Carson Tahoe Specialty Medical Center near downtown is the closest hospital.
