Carson City neighborhood with quick shopping, recreation and freeway access
Sharing its name with one of its roads, Northridge is a growing neighborhood packed between downtown Carson City and Interstate 580. The community consists of numerous homes, recreational amenities and shopping centers with anything from local Hispanic and Asian eateries to big box stores. Outside their doors, residents who like to stay active will find a 41,000-square-foot multi-use facility and a rugged, sagebrush blanketed hill. One of the neighborhood’s borders also has an extensive leisure path flanked by a few flat metal sculptures evoking mining, ranching and railroad themes. “There’s a couple of nice parks,” says Kari Breuer, a broker with Dickson Realty and a Northridge resident. “And it’s just within good proximity to shopping, entertainment, the hospital. And close proximity to a freeway entrance, but not too close that you have to look at it or hear it.”
From 1960s ranch-style homes to early 21st-century builds
Dense groups of homes line the neighborhood’s streets, with some high-end options providing desirable hillside views. Northridge’s development primarily occurred in three phases, with its housing ranging from 1960s and 1970s ranch-style homes to contemporary and Traditional stucco-exterior homes from near the turn of the 21st century. The neighborhood also has communities of manufactured homes, as shown by the several mobile home parks around Hot Springs Road. Costs go from about $350,000 for a ranch-style home to $620,000 for a newer two-story build double the size. Townhouses also run between $300,000 and $440,000.
San Marcos, La Tapatia and multicultural dining
Northridge's several shopping centers have a mix of local staples and chain brands. “There’s good old Starbucks and Round Table Pizza in that development around the corner,” Breuer says about the Walmart-anchored shopping area around College Parkway. “But San Marcos Grill is definitely a favorite. They have excellent margaritas, and they have a lot of really good seafood options on the menu.” San Marcos also does monthly tequila tastings, which Breuer adds is a “draw for some people, I’m sure.”
In fact, the community has quite a diverse dining scene, with French, Basque, Salvadoran and Vietnamese cuisines just a few of the options. La Tapatia sells homestyle Mexican ice cream and frozen treats, while the Grocery Outlet and the Hacienda Market and Grill provide convenient shopping options.
Hikes up Lone Mountain and the MAC’s multi-sport facility
Residents are never far from places to get some air and stretch their legs. Northridge has a few pocket parks with open fields, playgrounds and outdoor seating. Bikers, dog walkers and joggers are able to quickly get on a trail that runs near I-580. Lone Mountain sits right in the heart of the community, rising behind several backyards. The hill offers gentle hikes and views of the neighborhood. The Bob Crowell Multi-Purpose Athletic Center — or the MAC — provides basketball, volleyball and pickleball spaces. While the venue charges various rates based on age and residency, its walking track is free.
Mark Twain Elementary’s annual carnival
The neighborhood is home to Mark Twain Elementary School, which gets a B-plus from Niche. The school is among a few places in town that honor the legendary American writer. It’s well known Twain began using his famous pen name while writing here. The Mark Twain Elementary campus hosts September’s annual fall carnival, where the entertainment includes face painting and bounce houses. Carson middle and high schools serve the community and, respectively, get B-plus and B grades from Niche.
Celebrating Nevada Day with MAC powwow
Northridge is one of the sites for the city’s famous Nevada Day celebration, which bills itself as the biggest statehood event of its kind in the country. The celebration, beginning on the last Friday of October, consists of multiple activities at different venues across the city. At the MAC, performers in tribal garb lead the way during the Nevada Day Powwow. The far southwest corner of the neighborhood also serves as the starting point for the signature parade, which features marching bands and art cars.
Conveniently located for Reno commute
Several Jump Around Carson — or JAC — bus stops exist throughout the neighborhood, which is 2 miles from the heart of downtown Carson City. Otherwise, commuters are no more than a few minutes from Interstate 580. “Being on the north end of town, it’s convenient to anybody that might drive to Reno for work,” Breuer says. “I have friends who work at the Tesla Gigafactory [near Reno].”Although some homes are close to the interstate, a noise wall with Old West-themed art reduces the highway’s traffic sounds. The community is also 27 miles south of the Reno-Tahoe International Airport, the region’s hub for commercial flights. The Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center is right outside the neighborhood.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
