History, room and modern living in south Carson City
Carson City’s Stewart area shares its name with the institution that began boarding Native American children from Nevada’s Great Basin tribes in 1890. Closed in 1980, the Stewart Indian School’s campus survives through the neighborhood of distinct stone buildings distributed across the lush fields between Snyder Avenue and Clear Creek. The site, designated a historic property in 1985, now houses a museum and hosts events like a massive annual powwow. Beyond this attraction, Stewart offers extra room and modern living between a busy commercial corridor and acres of rugged hills with sweeping views of the surrounding mountains.
“The south end of Carson is very close to all the restaurants, grocery stores, shopping, Home Depot, Costco and things like that. There are a lot of amenities down on the south end,” says Chris Sieben, a Realtor with Re/Max Professionals-Carson.
Ranch-style homes, room for horses and new additions
Pines and swaths of sagebrush hedge many homes, which occupy spacious lots with occasional strips of grass. “It’s one of the only areas in Carson where a lot of the homes are zoned for 1-acre parcel, and they’re zoned for horses,” Sieben says.
Subdivisions with more green lawns exist south of the old Stewart Indian School and in an area around a small open space called Mayor’s Park. Ranch-style homes are common, but the community also features Spanish Revival, Craftsman and contemporary designs. Costs range from $430,000 for a new contemporary home to about $800,000 for a larger ranch-style house. Larger luxury homes can pass $1 million. The area also has new townhouses between $400,000 and $500,000.
The community also has an overall CAP Index Crime Score of 2 out of 10, putting it below the national average of 4.
Casinos and diverse dining along U.S. Highway 395
The U.S. Highway 395 area bordering Stewart to the west has several entertainment establishments, including the Casino Fandango. The casino is home to Duke’s Steakhouse, an elegant yet laidback spot with sailing-themed decor, chandeliers and leather seating. Shinsen Sushi and Ti Amo Italian Grille are two of the casino’s other eateries, while the Bamboo Garden and El Charro Avitia contribute to the area’s diverse dining options. As for groceries, options include Raley’s, Costco Wholesale and Trader Joe’s. “There’s a lot of shopping down there. We go down there a lot to go to Costco,” Sieben says. “There’s a lot of new businesses going in down there.”
Neighborhood park amenities and adventures on Prison Hill
Ross Gold Park offers a neighborhood green space with a playground, a sand volleyball court and horseshoe pits. Trails go around the park’s rock-lined pond, allowing for relaxing walks and views of the water and its large waterfowl population. The pond also provides fishing opportunities. The Edmonds Sports Complex has multiple fields for youth baseball and soccer teams.
Stewart is a gateway to Prison Hill, a 2,500-acre recreational area with dirt trails crossing sagebrush-blanketed terrain. Visitors range from dog walkers and mountain bikers to dirt bikers and Jeep-driving off-roaders. The community also has quick access to U.S. Highway 50, which goes toward Lake Tahoe. “Within five minutes, you could be shooting up Highway 50 and then you’re 20 minutes from Lake Tahoe,” Sieben says. “A lot of people really do like it because it’s close to Lake Tahoe.”
Robotics and bowling at strong Carson City schools
Stewart is zoned for Al Seeliger Elementary School, which gets a B-plus from Niche. Students may then attend Eagle Valley Middle School and Carson High School, which both receive B grades from Niche. Eagle Valley’s extracurriculars include an after-school robotics club that tends to get participation from at least a few dozen students. The program gives participants early exposure to coding and other tech skills. At Carson High, successful programs include its bowling team, which went undefeated in 2025 and won a High Desert Interscholastic Bowling Program title.
Stewart Indian School’s Father’s Day Powwow
Each June, the Stewart Indian School Cultural Center & Museum hosts the Father’s Day Powwow, a free event featuring hundreds of performers decked out in colorful tribal wear. The three-day event brings out vendors selling crafts and foods like Indian tacos. In addition to the dance and musical shows, those attending will hear stories about the history behind the boarding school.
I-580 commute to Reno and other local destinations
A few Jump Around Carson — JAC — buses serve Stewart, while drivers have convenient access to Interstate 580. The interstate goes to Washoe Valley neighbors like Reno, about 38 miles north. I-580 also goes toward the Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center. The other major thoroughfare here is U.S. Highway 395, which goes straight toward downtown Carson City about 4 miles north. The Reno-Tahoe International Airport is the region’s hub for commercial flights.
