West Carteret benefits from a strategic location
West Carteret is a small neighborhood tucked between the nature of Rahway further west, and the urban amenities of Carteret proper to the east. This gives the community a strategic location, bestowing it with numerous nearby transportation and outdoor options, while also giving it a more intimate suburban feel compared to the towns it’s bookended by. Indeed, the Rahway River spills in from the west, giving residents prime riverside park space. But as various local realtors note, Carteret proper is a waterfront spot, too, and a new ferry service to New York City set to arrive in 2025 will certainly boost the appeal of West Carteret. Already new construction of luxury condos downtown is bringing liveliness to the surrounding area. "West Carteret is definitely a town on the move," says Eugene Higgins, a lifelong Carteret resident and Realtor with RE/MAX 1st Advantage. Higgins says many new residents are moving in from Staten Island, Jersey City and North Bergen.

Manufactured homes and classic Cape Cods
Another incentive that draws residents to the area is the reasonably low taxes and trend of many people putting down roots for the long haul, Higgins says, giving the area a sense of established community. "A lot of Carteret residents buy the house they grew up in from their parents and now raise their own family in it," Higgins says. He adds: "I feel like all my neighbors look out for each other." There’s a diversity of home styles and price points in West Carteret. For example, manufactured homes in the $50,000 to $70,000 range represent the entry point to the market. Some of these one-bed, one-bath properties have a renovated look with modern vinyl flooring and new stainless steel appliances. Single owner homes with yards sell for around $500,000. They have a classic look, such as three-bedroom Cape Cods. Detached garages can be the norm, and landscaping is generally minimalist – a few ornamental hedges and mature trees. The neighborhood scores a 3 out of 10 on the CAP crime index.

Carteret High offers a program to earn college credit
Local kids can attend the Carteret School District, beginning with Nicholas Minue Elementary, which receives a B-minus from Niche. For fifth and sixth grade, students go to C-rated Carteret Middle School. For seventh and eighth grade, there’s Carteret Junior High, which opened at the beginning of the 2022-2023 academic year, making it the borough's first new educational building in 60 years. Carteret High is rated B and has a student-teacher ratio of 12-to-1. Select students can earn college credit through Middlesex County College.

The New Jersey Turnpike is a defining amenity
The New Jersey Turnpike runs along the neighborhood’s east end, helping commuters to make the roughly 20-mile trek to New York City in about 40 minutes. Ferry service expected to launch from Carteret proper in 2025 will provide an alternative way to reach Staten Island. Public transportation is also available in the form of buses along Roosevelt Avenue, which is not only lined with commercial amenities but a key east-west passage for traveling to either Rahway or downtown Carteret. In addition, there’s a commuter rail station in Rahway on Milton Avenue.

Riverside trails at Joseph Medwick Park
“The nice thing about being close to Rahway is that you get some of that walkability,” says Rosmena DeSa, a realtor with RE/MAX New Millennium. “In particular the park system and nature along the Rahway River. It’s a great area to walk that people also use for picnics.” Joseph Medwick Park is certainly the crown jewel of West Carteret when it comes to outdoor recreation. There are traditional park facilities like a playground and sports fields, but many come to explore the paved trails along the river, which offers immersive nature and a chance to observe wildlife. Totaling one acre, Cornell Park offers a smaller experience, with a playground and basketball courts flanked by residential streets.

Restaurants are on Roosevelt Avenue
Roosevelt Avenue is the place to go for retail and restaurants. While chains like Subway are present, there are plenty of small locally owned eateries that run the gamut from Indian to Portuguese cuisine. Longtime standbys are just on the other side of the turnpike in downtown Carteret. “Bus Stop Diner is a good place to get all the meals of the day,” says Higgins. Daily seafood options and homemade soups fill out the menu. Next to the diner is a Shop Rite for groceries as well as a Walgreens for other necessities. You can't go wrong with an Italian hot dog from Tommy's Hot Dogs is placed across the street, and this is another small classic eatery with both plain hot dogs and chili cheese dogs.
Famous Dhaba and Sweets offers delicious Indian food, sweet and savory.

Ethnic Day celebrates diverse citizens
Annual events like the Charity Christmas Festival at Carteret Park are popular. September brings Ethnic Day, which celebrates the neighborhood's diverse cultures with carnival rides, games and food vendors. Higgins says The Carteret Performing Arts Center is a big fixture of the community. Opened in 2021, this 1,600-seat theater presents comedy shows, tribute bands and local high school performances.
West Carteret is a very diverse community which can be experienced through it's food at events.
