A rural equestrian community in the Sierra Pelona foothills
A northern Los Angeles County outpost, Hasley Canyon’s lifestyle is defined by a remote setting at the foot of the Sierra Pelona Mountains. "It's beautiful out here and very quiet. It's like being in the country but so close to town,” says Ouida Robinson, a Realtor with Re/Max of Valencia, who has over a decade of experience in the area. Here winding two-lane roads and homes have views of the foothills, lush with greenery throughout the spring then golden at the height of summer. Many residents have access to nature in spacious yards, with horse ranches and barns, plus they can have more of the outdoors at equestrian trails and a lakefront state park.
Castaic Lake State Recreation Area and equestrian areas
About 5 miles northeast of Hasley Canyon, Castaic Lake State Recreation Area features a scenic reservoir surrounded by the Sierra Pelona Mountains. "It's an attraction for everyone who lives in the area,” says Realtor Armando Padilla, who works with Re/Max of Santa Clarita and has over 15 years of experience in the region. The park’s most popular activities include trout fishing, boating and swimming, which is only allowed at a beach protected by lifeguards. The park also has trails for hiking, horseback riding and mountain biking. Hasley Canyon Equestrian Center, less than a mile east of the community, has staging areas that connect to a creekside trail for more horseback riding and hiking. For horse camps and classes, there’s the Heavens Hoofprints Equestrian Center, centrally located in the neighborhood.
Ranch-style homes and contemporary farmhouses in Hasley Canyon
Northwest of Santa Clarita, Hasley Canyon is composed of meandering roads lined with multiacre lots. Many of the yards have entry gates or fenced-in pastures, plus their own horse stables. The area’s serene rural atmosphere is highlighted in its CAP Index Crime Score: a 2 out of 10, in contrast to the national average of 4. Ranch-style homes range from $1.3 million to $2.2 million, while contemporary farmhouses range from $1.7 million to $1.8 million. There are some fiscal benefits to these homes: “It’s typically an area where there’s no high HOA or Mello-Roos tax,” Padilla says. “It has a very stable market, although we’re still experiencing low inventory in all of Santa Clarita.” For lower prices, there’s Hasley Canyon Mobile Estates, which Robinson manages. The manufactured homes, which usually have carports and low-maintenance yards, range from about $150,000 to $250,000.
Well-rated schools, including Valencia High School
On Niche, Live Oak Elementary School has a B-plus rating, while Castaic Middle School has an A-minus. Castaic Middle features award-winning performing arts and video production programs, and it even has a television studio. Valencia High School has an A rating and offers 17 pathways for potential careers, including multimedia production, professional music and systems programming.
Diverse eateries, plus convenient shopping at Hasley Canyon Village
Although there isn’t any retail in Hasley Canyon, residents are only a few miles away from the closest dining options. "There are a couple of really good locally owned Mexican restaurants in the area," Robinson says. These include Las Delicias Sport Taqueria, which serves classics like burritos and menudo in a relaxed atmosphere. Often described as a hidden gem, Matsu Sushi serves sushi towers and sashimi, with a bar where patrons can watch the chefs assemble the fish. Hasley Canyon Village, a strip mall, has fast-food options like Subway and Wingstop as well as a Ralphs for groceries. Additionally, Hasley Canyon is less than 10 miles to Valencia Town Center, a massive open-air mall with over 170 shops, restaurants and entertainment venues.
The Cowboy Festival and Six Flags Magic Mountain
With a quiet setting free of bustle and crowds, Hasley Canyon is just outside of Santa Clarita but still has proximity to some of Los Angeles County’s biggest attractions. One of these is the annual Cowboy Festival held in William S. Hart Park. Here locals and tourists alike can experience a glimpse of the Old West, with a weekend of swing dancing to blue grass music, panning for gold and shopping for cowboy boots. At the 200-acre Six Flags Magic Mountain, there are 20 rollercoasters, more than in any other theme park in the world.
A 40-mile drive from downtown LA
Hasley Canyon is a car-dependent community about 40 miles away from downtown Los Angeles; the most direct route is via Interstate 5. State Route 126 goes to Ventura and the coast, about 50 miles away. For public transportation, there’s a bus stop on the eastern side of the community, at the intersection of Del Valle Road and Hasley Canyon Road. For medical care, residents can drive for about 10 miles to Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital. The closest major airport, the Hollywood Burbank Airport, is about 30 miles away.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
