Under 30 miles from downtown Denver and 50 miles from Colorado Springs is the small town of Castle Pines. With a population of just over 11,000 residents and regular developments of new construction homes, Castle Pines is rapidly becoming one of the Denver metropolitan area’s most desirable suburbs.
Despite being an hour’s drive from the Rocky Mountains, Castle Pines features front-range views across the wild prairies surrounding the town. “It really feels like you're living in the mountains," says John "Sean" McGowan of Fulcrum Real Estate, who has over 25 years of real estate experience in the Denver metropolitan area.
New construction and luxury homes
Castle Pines’ housing market moves slower than the national average, with houses spending an average of 59 days on the market compared to the national average of 42 days. Despite this, 588 houses were sold in the town in 2023; as of April 2024, there are 63 houses on the market. The average 2023 sale price was $1.25 million.
Castle Pines’ oldest and most affordable housing is on the north side. These houses range in price from $750,000 for a new-construction home to $1.15 million for a modern farmhouse built in 2000.
Houses south of the parkway weave between Castle Pines Golf Club and Country Club at Castle Pines. Most fall within the city's most prominent and exclusive luxury gated community, the Village at Castle Pines. This community provides residents with premium amenities, including 24/7 security and private fitness facilities. Houses in the Village cost $2.2 to $3.2 million on average and feature modern styles with hardwood floors and golf course views.
Hiking through history
Castle Pines residents enjoy a variety of parks for all activities. The Retreat, Daniel’s Gate and Coyote Ridge Parks include playgrounds with soft mulch suitable for young children and sports fields for all ages. McArthur Ranch Park includes bike trails and a picnic area, while Daniel’s Park and Elk Ridge Park include hiking trails and a large soccer field. Outside the town’s borders, the Backcountry Wilderness Area trails wind around Wildcat Mountain. Grigs Road Pavilion offers dog-friendly trails for bikers and hikers, connecting to the Highlands Point East/West Trail by Highlands Ranch.
History buffs can spend a day at Cherokee Ranch & Castle, just west of Castle Pines. Looking like a fairytale come to life, this unusual fortress was built by architect Burnham Hoyt in the 1920s and inspired by Scottish-style castles from the 1450s. The castle is situated on a hill with 200-mile panoramic views of the countryside. Locals can take guided tours of the castle, join afternoon tea or enjoy wine and whiskey-tasting events hosted by the Cherokee Ranch & Castle Foundation. The castle is also available on a rental basis for weddings and private events.
Castle Pines Golf Club, co-designed by famous golfer Jack Nicklaus, opened in 1981, and its course has ranked in the top five on Golf Digest's America's 100 Greatest list since 1983. The club is currently undergoing a $17 million upgrade that, when completed, will expand its facilities with a new heated pool, cabanas and more space for dining and racquet sports. The Country Club at Castle Pines' 395 membership cap puts it among Colorado's most exclusive social organizations.
Shopping at the village square
Locals head to the Village Square shopping center to get groceries at King Soopers grocery store or enjoy a meal out at one of the varied restaurants. Locals swear by Miyo Cafe's hearty breakfast burritos and coffee. It's hard to beat the Monday oyster special at Trestles Coastal Cuisine, a family-owned and operated seafood restaurant by experienced restauranters Jose and Mimi Espinoza. Taking in a sunset from Danielle's Scratch Kitchen's patio makes a great date night, and their authentic Italian cuisine only adds to the romance.
