Upscale and spacious community at the base of the Catalina Mountains

The Saint Philip’s in the Hills Episcopal Church sits at the south entrance of the Catalina Foothills Estates. Showcasing Spanish Mission architecture, the historic landmark is the brainchild of Josias Joesler, the influential Switzerland native who also drew up the homes in the Catalina Foothills Estates. The development, beginning in the 1930s, kickstarted a sprawling Tucson metro community named for its location at the base of the Catalina Mountains. The neighborhood today draws those seeking room and elegant Southwestern homes made with European and Latin American inspiration. “Everything in the Catalina Foothills is the top end of Tucson, pretty much. We call it ‘District 16,’ and it’s up by all the hiking,” says Christina Esala, a Realtor with Tierra Antigua Realty. “It’s just a really prestigious place to live. It has a good school district and lots of nearby shopping, nice restaurants and things to do.”

Spanish Mission homes amid sprawling desert landscape

Spanish Mission-style homes make up much of the Estates, and some incorporate midcentury modern elements. Surrounded by palms, cacti and other desert shrubs, homes sit on spacious lots that can easily exceed 1 acre. “Every single home was designed and built to keep the view of the mountains. They’ll have large windows specifically placed just for the mountain views and not see to see any other home. So, you kind of feel like you’re by yourself out there in the desert,” Esala says. Single-family homes with footprints roughly from 1,500 to 2,500 square feet cost between $600,000 and $800,000, while even larger options exist between $1 million and $2 million. Townhouses mainly run between $300,000 and $600,000, while condos mostly go from $200,000 to $350,000.

Designer brand shopping and fine Italian dining around La Encantada

Catalina Foothills Estates is home to La Encantada, an open-air mall and one of the Tucson area’s leading shopping destinations. Visitors can browse various boutiques, stores carrying designer brands and trendy eateries. For dining options, Sullivan’s and Fleming’s offer steakhouses. The Vivace Restaurant serves Italian fare in an upscale setting, and its outdoor patio treats patrons to views of the mountains. For upscale Southwestern meals, there’s the Contigo Latin Kitchen, which also provides a patio with scenic outdoor views. The mall is home to AJ’s Fine Foods, an Arizona gourmet chain that Esala considers among the top grocers in town.

Hiking the Catalina Mountains and bike rides along the Rillito River

The foothills offer plenty of adventures across the rugged desert landscape. Hikers can venture into the nearby canyons and get sweeping views of the valley as they walk toward the local peaks. The community is also a few blocks from a section of the Chuck Huckelberry Loop, which also follows the Rillito River for relaxing water views. Known locally as “The Loop,” the trail network spans over 130 miles and is popular among bikers and even horseback riders in greater Tucson. The trail also stops at sites like the Rio Vista Natural Resource Park, known for its distinctly shaped cacti and historic labyrinth landmark. The park neighbors the many courts of the Tucson Racquet & Fitness Club.

Access to STEM-focused Catalina Foothills schools

Although three different Tucson metro school systems serve the Catalina Foothills area, the Estates are closest to campuses within the Catalina Foothills School District. Niche ranks the system an A grade and ranks it as the fourth-best district in Arizona. Students may start at Manzanita Elementary School, which earns an A from Niche. Distinct programs available to elementary students include robotics courses that involve collaborative programming and engineering work. Students may then attend Orange Grove Middle School and Catalina Foothills High School, which both receive A grades.

Luaus, barbecue and wine tastings at Hacienda del Sol

Once owned by Catalina Foothills’ original builder, the Hacienda del Sol Guest Ranch Resort used to draw celebrity guests like silver screen star Katharine Hepburn and aviation magnate Howard Hughes. The hotel hosts festivities like October's Zin, Blues & BBQ. Guests fill one of the resort’s open spaces as they mingle over gourmet barbecue and a selection of numerous Zinfandel wines. The hotel also hosts the annual Labor Day Luau, a Tucson tradition.

A few miles from downtown Tucson

A Sun Tran bus stop is available right outside the neighborhood. The North Oracle Road thoroughfare connects Catalina Foothills to neighbors like Oro Valley, about 9 miles north. The neighborhood is also about 5 miles north of downtown Tucson. Located about a half-hour south, the Tucson International Airport is the area’s hub for commercial flights. For health care needs, the community sits less than 10 miles from the Northwest and Tucson medical centers, the latter of which includes a pediatric hospital called TMC for Children.

Important to know

Catalina Foothills Estates has an overall CAP Index crime score of 3 out of 10, putting it slightly below the national average of 4. The community may also at risk of potential wildfires.
