The transformation of a post-Gold Rush community
A couple miles north of Cave Junction, the almost-ghost town of Kerby is still very much alive with art and history. In the 1850s, the town was founded when prospectors struck gold in nearby Josephine Creek. The Pioneer Hotel was constructed to accommodate the hopeful prospectors, and Agnes Sawyer, the innkeeper’s wife, planted a maple tree next to it. But the gold rush turned out to be short-lived, and the hotel building changed form over the years – from post office to saloon to whimsical woodworking gallery. Similarly, many of the neighborhood's old homes have been refurbished and restyled while maintaining their original structure. All the while, the maple tree has stood the test of time, providing shade to each new generation of this resilient community. The tree is now outfitted with a treehouse, thanks to the handiwork of the local gallery owner.

Humble art hub in rural Southwest Oregon
It’s a Burl, the woodworking gallery, features locally made artwork and wooden sculptures, attracting a “mix of both locals and people from all over the world,” says Sara Shinerock, Gallery Manager of It’s a Burl and lifelong Kerby resident. “We give a local discount. We’ve had lots of events in the past – art walks to parties to featuring local artists. Every day we open is an event.” Kerbyville Museum, Guild Gallery & Art Center and Cave Junction Farmers Market are all within walking distance of It’s a Burl. “People can park in one of our parking areas and go to everything. It’s all within 500 feet of each other,” Shinerock says. Since 1959, Kerbyville Museum has preserved the area’s history. Exhibits detail the lives of the Native Americans and early pioneers of the region. Museum guests can walk through a replica of a jail, sit in an old schoolroom and learn about life as a gold miner. Guild Gallery & Art Center is home to the Southern Oregon Guild of Artists and Artisans. It hosts art classes, workshops and exhibitions featuring a variety of media, from glass to fabric arts.
