Located within 5 miles of Downtown Chandler, Gilbert and Mesa, Amberwood is a Phoenix suburb where the proximity to jobs and freeways attracts a variety of people, from families seeking highly rated schools to singles excited by nearby nightlife. Major employers like Honeywell, Boeing and Intel are all within 10 miles, and smaller employers can be found in the business parks east of Arizona Avenue. “The 101 and the 60 are nearby, so it’s easy to commute if you have to go to Phoenix or Gilbert,” says Chantel Gutierrez-Davis, a designated broker with Perk Prop Real Estate who’s sold homes in the area for 15 years. Residents can bike to the nightlife and restaurants in Chandler and Gilbert, and several neighborhood parks provide places to get outside. Nearby houses of worship include New Valley Church, Shiva Vishnu Temple and Temple Beth Shalom of the East Valley. “It’s a great community here,” says Sheila Spinck, an associate broker with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Arizona Properties who’s sold homes here for 9 years. “It's settled, calm and neighborly.”

Ranch-style homes from the 1980s

Amberwood’s 1980s ranch-style homes sit along streets lined with palm trees and sidewalks. The houses’ earth-toned stucco exteriors often match their xeriscaped front yards, which are sometimes decorated with cacti and mesquite trees, and most have backyard pools to cool off from the desert heat. Homes can have between two and four bedrooms and range from 800 to 2,900 square feet. Prices typically range from $350,000 to $600,000, depending on size and renovations. One- and two-story Mediterranean-style 1980s townhouses are also available throughout the neighborhood. These typically have two or three bedrooms and between 700 and 2,000 square feet. Prices usually range from $230,000 to $450,000, depending on size, plus $120 to $270 in monthly homeowners association fees that cover ground maintenance. Low-rise apartment complexes can be found in the neighborhood’s east along Arizona Avenue.

Service learning at Dobson High

Local kids are zoned for the Mesa Unified School District, which earns an A-minus from Niche and is a school choice district. Kids might choose to attend the A-rated Franklin Accelerated Academy’s Jordan Campus from kindergarten through Grade 8, or they might be zoned for the B-plus-rated Pomeroy Elementary and A-minus-rated Summit Academy Junior High. Near the 101 and the 60

State Route 101, locally known as the 101 or Loop 101, is just over a mile west; Highway 60 is 3 miles north and leads 7 miles west to Interstate 10. Downtown Phoenix is about 20 miles away. Residents can take Arizona Avenue 3 miles south to Downtown Chandler or 6 miles north to Mesa; Gilbert is 4 miles east on Elliot Road. The Valley Metro bus stops throughout the neighborhood, and bike lanes and sidewalks make the neighborhood bike- and pedestrian-friendly. Chandler Regional Medical Center and Banner Desert Medical Center are both within 5 miles. Country bars and fine dining in Downtown Chandler

Locals have several restaurants and shopping options nearby, and Downtown Chandler is around 3 miles south. “In Downtown Chandler, there’s a bunch of high-end restaurants and country bars,” Gutierrez-Davis says. The Hidden House is popular for an upscale dinner, while SanTan Brewing Company and Bourbon Jack's American Tavern are known for their lively bar scenes and live music. Closer to home, the family-owned Shimogamo has served authentic Japanese cuisine since 2003. Chase's Diner is a favorite according to Spinck, who describes it as "a 1950s-style local mom-and-pop diner.” Several shopping centers are nearby, with retail stores like Walmart and grocery stores like Fry’s, Von Hanson’s Meats & Spirits and Lee Lee International Supermarkets.

Shawnee Park’s dog park

At the nearly 13-acre Hoopes Park in the neighborhood’s center, kids can burn off some energy on the shaded playground or basketball courts. While the 20-acre Shawnee Park in the east also has a playground and sports fields, it’s best known for its off-leash dog park, which has two fenced areas and an agility course. To cool off on hot summer days, residents head to the Desert Oasis Aquatic Center for its 8-lane swimming pool and water slides. Cycling is also popular here, and the over 315-mile Maricopa Trail in the neighborhood’s north circles around the Phoenix metro area.

The Downtown Chandler Art Walk in October

The Chandler Center for the Arts in Downtown Chandler hosts regular events, including ballet performances, concerts and stand-up comedy. Each Sunday morning in October, local artists set up booths for the Downtown Chandler Art Walk. In December, residents gather for the Tumbleweed Tree Lighting Ceremony, where Chandler’s iconic tumbleweed Christmas tree is illuminated; the event also features live holiday music and visits with Santa.
