Channelview blends residential and industrial vibes on Houston's east side
Originally the home of Lorenzo de Zavala, one of the key figureheads responsible for securing Texas' independence from Mexico in the 19th century, Channelview offers much more than waterfront views of the Houston Ship Channel. The site of the United States Army's San Jacinto Ordinance Depot during World War II, Channelview carries historical significance as well as a diverse housing stock that offers a wealth of options for homebuyers. Home to over 43,000 residents, Channelview now features a blend of residential and industrial vibes on the banks of the San Jacinto River and Buffalo Bayou less than 20 miles from downtown Houston. "Channelview is very small. Driving on Interstate 10 — the major thoroughfare that goes through there — if you blink, you miss it," says local Realtor Brandy Swilley of JLA Realty, who grew up in the community. Swilley says many of Channelview's residents work in the surrounding industrial complexes, though some workers now commute to the plants from farther away.
