Artsy historic nook in downtown Charleston
Quiet, cobblestone streets, church bell towers, colorful flowerboxes, art galleries and fine dining establishments greet residents and visitors alike in the French Quarter. Named for the French Huguenot colonists who settled here, the neighborhood has meticulously preserved its historic homes, churches and markets. “This is the center of tourism in Charleston, and one of the oldest neighborhoods in the country,” says Realtor and broker Charlie McCrary with Carolina One Real Estate. McCrary has sold homes for over 30 years. “But it’s still mainly a residential area. People buy here because it’s so close to so much of Charleston. It’s a great place to have a second home because when you come to town, you can walk to dinner or the galleries. You don’t even need to drive, which is great because parking downtown is difficult.” In addition to its access to Charleston's thriving art and restaurant scenes, the French Quarter draws with its historic homes and buildings. To help preserve the French Quarter against the threats of flooding and climate change, the City of Charleston has extensive floodplain management plans, and a Planning, Preservation & Sustainability Department helps preserve the historic character of one of America's oldest neighborhoods.

Home to the Dock Street Theatre and Robert Lange Studios
The French Quarter is home to the Charleston City Market, one of the nation's oldest public markets, dating to 1804. The market features over 300 vendors, offering local food vendors, handcrafted art and other goods, such as Gullah sweetgrass baskets. Locally owned and chain boutiques line Bay Street and nearby King Street. Restaurants are a large draw for residents and tourists, with options like Slightly North of Broad, which offers upscale Lowcountry cuisine, or Gingerline, which is known for its cocktails and weekend brunch. The Dock Street Theater has served the community for over 200 years, showing plays, concerts and musicals throughout the year.
The French Quarter is also known for its art galleries, including Robert Lange Studios, which has showcased art and hosted artists-in-residence since 2005. Megan Lange, co-founder of the studio, notes the impact art galleries like Robert Lange Studios have had on the French Quarter community. “This is the kind of space that beckons creative people to come and be recharged. The French Quarter has such historic charm, and so much of it has been completely untouched, so it just feels like an area where art is supposed to be,” says Lange. “Our building has been here since 1670, and it’s been a creative space for over 100 years. You can literally feel the art here on the walls.”
