Just across the bridge from downtown Charleston
Across the Ashley River from downtown Charleston, South Windermere is settled along Wappoo Creek and features many of the older homes west of downtown. “The big attraction to the neighborhood is the 10-mile path that used to be a railroad bed called the West Ashley Greenway,” says Alton Brown, the principal broker and sales associate at Carriage Properties with nearly 20 years of real estate experience. “The pathway passes by a great school, and some students and teachers use that route to get there by walking or riding their bikes.”

Houses in the millions close to the water in South Windermere
The housing in South Windermere started being developed around the 1950s, with most homes built in the ‘50s and ‘60s. The price range is from $700,000 to the millions, especially for houses closer to the water. With the luxury of having water views, homes near the water are in an extreme flood zone, according to the First Street website, which tracks environmental risks. With the age of the homes, there will be some that have been completely renovated and some that need improvements. “Now and then, you’ll see a house with the original occupant, but that’s getting rarer these days,” Brown says. Whether ranch-style or cottages, most of the homes in South Windermere are made of brick, with three to four bedrooms and between 1,500 and 3,000 square feet. “Along Rebellion Road are the houses with up to six bedrooms and 5,000 square feet by the water,” Brown adds. These homes are two-story farmhouses and ones that are raised above the garage in case of flooding.

Charles Towne Landing
Although a couple of miles from the neighborhood, a state park depicting the history of Charleston and South Carolina is a popular destination. The Charles Towne Landing State Historic Site describes where settlers landed in 1670 and established the start of the state of South Carolina. It also started the city of Charleston, initially called Charles Towne. Guests can board Adventure, Charleston’s only 17th-century replica cargo vessel. Also part of the park is the Charles Towne Landing Animal Forest, a natural habitat zoo with pumas, black bears and wild turkeys. All were around when the site was a newly settled English colony in the 1670s.
