A longstanding Charleston neighborhood minutes from bustling King Street
In 1841, Thomas Gadsden established 225 individual lots from existing cattle pastures, creating private land for dwellers in the area. Now a suburban area, Westside is nestled between the Ashley River and King Street and adjacent to The Citadel, featuring beautiful parks and waterfront views. This neighborhood is filled with history and modern amenities, earning respect from both longtime residents and newcomers. Westside is less than 3 miles from the heart of Charleston, making it an excellent location for those who want to live close to the city’s amenities at a lower price point than other neighborhoods.
Historic homes and duplexes near the Ashley River
The community offers a variety of architectural styles that reflect its longstanding presence. There are Colonial-era homes, Gothic Revival homes, shotgun cottages and traditional two-story homes with Charleston’s famous piazzas. These iconic sidelong porches offered a place to cool off, relax and entertain before the invention of air conditioning. Homes here are densely packed on oak and palmetto-lined streets, with sidewalks that connect to commercial streets like Cannon Street and King Street. "It's rare to see new homes here due to the limiter number of lots," says Realtor Chamberlain Chesnut, owner and broker of Chesnut Real Estate. "The inventory can be hit and miss, but homes that list typically feature extensive renovations. Home prices typically range between $500,000 and $1.5 million, depending on the size of the home and the level of renovations completed.
