A historic and natural escape overlooking the West Side
Overlooking the West Side of Charleston from a verdant slope of Appalachian hills is Edgewood, the city's first planned suburb. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Edgewood preserves the story of a turn-of-the-century Charleston through its century-old homes, making it essential to the city's identity. Construction began in the early 1900s to provide a natural escape from Charleston's then-oppressively industrial downtown. Edgewood offered precisely the escape city residents were looking for, and it continues to do that in the 21st century with its prized homes and parks. "The homes can just be absolutely breathtaking," says Realtor Lisa Eden of Old Colony Realtors. "Some of them now are in need of being rehabbed. But, there are still some brick streets with big two- and three-story homes with gorgeous yards. It's just really a unique area."
Nearby is the river trail along Kanawha Blvd, where Edgewood, WV residents can enjoy stunning sunset views along the river.

A few rehabs sprinkled between finely aged Colonial Revivals
Many homes in Edgewood are between 60 and 100 years old, and many of them sit on tree-covered yards with a steep downhill grade, providing back porches with shade and sweeping views of Charleston. "Especially in the evening, the light effect through there is absolutely beautiful," Eden says. However, this being a historic neighborhood, not all of Charleston's history has been prosperous with the closing of coal mines over the decades, and some abandoned properties have been neglected as a result. But investors are turning the tide, as many Craftsman and Tudor-style cottages have been given major rehabs in the last few years, often receiving new roofs and exteriors. Those updates give their historic bodies a somewhat modern trim contrasting with the purely antique trappings of well-preserved Cape Cod and Colonial Revival homes. "They don't build them like that anymore," Eden says. "The things that you see in those houses are just beautiful." Construction of homes in Edgewood continued well past the 1940s, so there are also some midcentury options, mostly split-levels. Buyers looking to rehab a weathered property can expect to pay between $15,000 and $100,000. Most turnkey condition homes sell for between $100,000 and $300,000.

Direct access to hunting clubs, country clubs and parks with archery
With a country club and 90-plus-acre park in this already-lush neighborhood, Edgewood offers some of the most competitive access to natural areas and recreation in Charleston. Cato Park's over 5 miles of hiking trails meander through grottos of mountain laurel, rhododendron and felled trees, many of which hide morels to scavenge for after it rains. But that merely scratches the surface, as Cato Park offers a dog park, archery range, BMX pump track and community pool too. Across the street, the Edgewood Country Club is among the region's premier clubs thanks to its 18-hole golf course, Har-Tru clay tennis courts and pool complex, not to mention indoor squash courts and a fitness center. Some undeveloped expanses of forest in Edgewood enshroud hunting clubs, ensuring sharpshooters have easy access to preserves for turkey, white-tailed deer and other game.

Short, hilly walks to West End restaurants
Since its genesis, Edgewood has been strictly residential. Over the years, a small handful of businesses have set up shop there, like Best of Crete Deli, a tiny Greek corner eatery where locals go for quick bites and casual meetups. But for the most part, residents hike down the hill to the West Side of Charleston to shop at Kroger or grab a meal with acquaintances. The West Side is home to some of Charleston's most celebrated restaurants on Washington Street, like The Grill, a no-frills American restaurant serving what many locals consider the best Reuben in West Virginia.

Interstate access and bus routes
Although Edgewood's eastern border is formed by Interstate 77, there are few access points in the neighborhood. Drivers must either head north to Edens Fork Road or south to Crescent Road. But that isn't much of a problem anyway, given the neighborhood's proximity to the West Side, as it's usually quicker to drive south through the neighborhood than on I-77. As an alternative to driving, residents can catch a bus on Beech Avenue to reach downtown, but many others choose to walk, although the hilly terrain can deter some pedestrians.
