Forested feel and relative affordability
With its budding East Charlotte location, Hickory Ridge is a suburb with seclusion and scenery. Homes here are architecturally diverse, surrounded by towering trees and rambling creeks. “You have homes from the 1980s and ‘90s with character. And the price is a little more affordable, so it’s good for first-time buyers looking for a starter home,” says Albert Johnson, owner of Legacy Real Estate. Local Realtor Landon House with Keller Williams Ballantyne Area, agrees: “There’s a lot of opportunity here as prices are still low, and it’s a really great place to live. You have direct access to Uptown, Plaza Midwood and NoDa.” For buyers who want to be close to East Charlotte attractions without blowing the budget, Hickory Ridge is a promising option.

Subdivisions with seclusion in East Charlotte
Meandering residential streets split off from busy central thoroughfares, welcoming Hickory Ridge residents home to a leafy-green slice of suburbia. Small lakes and creeks curl around residential subdivisions, trickling through homeowners' backyards and adding to the neighborhood’s secluded feel. Ranch-style, split-level and bi-level homes from the 1980s are common, spread across wooded lots where mature oaks and maples provide a sense of privacy between houses. There are plenty of charming Cape Cods and even a handful of homes that take inspiration from midcentury modern styles. Listing prices for these houses typically fall between $250,000 and $350,000, though a smattering of townhouses along W.T. Harris Boulevard usually sell in the lower $200,000s. “Right now, we’re seeing a good bit of turnover,” House says. Limited inventory drives a competitive market in Hickory Ridge, with listings finding new owners within three weeks on the market.

Big-box shopping is never far
Hickory Ridge is surrounded by shopping and commercial areas on all three sides, making for easy errand runs. Residents leave the secluded streets and head south to Albemarle Road’s shopping parks for weekly stops at big box stores such as Target, Food Lion and Lowe’s. Though there are plenty of chain restaurants to pick from, Sunrise Restaurant is the go-to for hearty comfort food. This East Charlotte staple has been feeding area residents since 1989 and is known for its specialty homemade tea, which is available by the gallon. The Hickory Grove library branch is also close by, hosting well-attended events and welcoming newly relocated residents in search of community resources.

Major thoroughfares connect to the rest of the city
Uptown Charlotte is roughly 10 miles away via Albemarle Road to Independence Boulevard, making for a roughly 20-minute commute. Charlotte Douglas International Airport is around 16 miles west, but residents are close to some Charlotte outskirt towns such as Mint Hill. Bus routes along Albemarle Road shuttle car-free commuters in this vehicle-dependent suburb between Harrisburg and Uptown. “It’s not as accessible to the highway, but you’re so close to University City,” notes Johnson. “The light rail will come down that way eventually, though it’s still some years out.”
