Historic homes near vibrant bars, restaurants and shops
If there are three words that describe Plaza Midwood, they’re historic, happening and homey. Plaza Midwood is where established American Craftsman homes, lauded local restaurants and artisanal boutiques mingle. It’s where residents spend evenings at their favorite dive bars listening to live music and catching up with friends or enjoying block parties closer to home. “It’s probably one of the most recognizable neighborhoods in Charlotte, whether by its name or the names of its streets, like Central Avenue or The Plaza,” says Andy Dameron, a Realtor with Keller Williams and 7 years of experience in the business. And even if buyers aren’t yet familiar with the community, according to 20-year Realtor with Savvy + Co and long-time resident Jeffrey King, Plaza Midwood will be quick to steal their hearts. King: “I’ve never helped anyone move into Plaza Midwood who, if they didn’t know it already, didn’t fall in love with it once they came.”

Shopping and dining options adorn Central Avenue
Supperland is one of King’s personal favorite restaurants, operating out of an old church building. “All the food is cooked over a wood fire down at the end of the kitchen that’s visible to everyone,” he says. Dameron similarly gushes about the establishment. “It’s one of the hottest places in town. They’ve won every award you can win in the city, and for forever, you couldn’t even get a reservation there,” he says. Thirsty Beaver is another neighborhood icon, a small dive bar surrounded by a horseshoe of apartment buildings. Locals can enjoy live music on select nights, and the bar has even attracted celebrity patrons like Mick Jagger. For St. Patrick’s Day, The Workman’s Friend is a great spot to share drinks with friends, ranked the 12th best Irish pub in the country by Yelp in 2023. For groceries, residents can stop by Harris Teeter or visit The Common Market, a hip convenience store with a deli, bar and craft beers. Plaza Midwood also offers a ton of local boutiques like Boris & Natasha, a clothing store with eclectic choices, and Cltch, an artisanal gift shop.

Houses, both historic and reimagined
“Plaza Midwood’s got one of our few historic districts in Charlotte,” Dameron says. “A lot of the homes are 100 years old. That’s unique for Charlotte, since we’re a much newer city. But if homes are in the historic district on the southwest corner of the neighborhood, they’re protected from ever being torn down.” Most historic homes are American Craftsman bungalows, though a few follow Victorian and American Small House designs. Outside of the historic district, homebuyers will find bungalows, Colonial Revival homes and brick Tudor Revival cottages. 21st century builds still take cues from the historic district, following New American Craftsman and New Traditional designs. Prices start around $650,000 and taper off after $1.1 million. Newly constructed townhouses are also on the market, with prices ranging from $550,000 to $1.5 million, depending on square footage. Condos under 1,000 square feet sell for around $300,000.

Green spaces
Veterans Park is just south of Central Avenue, featuring a playground and a splash pad for kids to stomp around during the dog days of summer. Kids aren’t the only ones getting exercise in thanks to the park’s fitness court, an open-air gym with push-up bars and other equipment designed to give residents full-body workouts. The expansive Charlotte Country Club is on the east side of the neighborhood, serving as a locale for special events, including weddings, or weekend activities, such as playing a round of golf. For athletes, the country club offers pickleball courts, tennis courts, a diving pool and more.

Community events
Midwood Maynia is the neighborhood’s spring celebration, with a parade leading to Midwood Park for live music, food trucks, drinks and fun. But King notes that subdivisions are always organizing events throughout the year or just doing their part to make the neighborhood safe and welcoming for all. “They’ll close off certain streets during Halloween so children can trick-or-treat,” he says. “There are so many kids out, it looks like something out of a movie.”

Public transit in Plaza Midwood
Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) bus routes 4, 9, 17 and 39 run by Plaza Midwood’s periphery. The Sunnyside Avenue station of the CityLynx Gold Line streetcar is to the southwest of the neighborhood, within 2 miles of most residences. Thanks to sidewalks, residents can easily walk down Central Avenue. For most residents, US Route 74, a major east-west highway, is a 5-minute drive south. However, the nearby stretch of this road, dubbed Independence Boulevard, is notoriously congested with frequent accidents. Interstate 277, the loop that encircles Charlotte's urban center, is also only a few minutes away by car. This road allows for convenient access to I-77, the major north-south highway in town.

Having grown up in and around the Charlotte area, Plaza Midwood is the only neighborhood where I have felt the warmth of a community. In the midst of a large whirling city of chaos this small neighborhood wreaks of unity and passion. From working in a local dive bar to shopping at my local grocery store; the members of this community have endless passion for their neighbors and neighborhood itself. I have never felt more at home.
