Development and convenience without a high price barrier
Founded in 1935, Reid Park was one of Charlotte’s first exclusively African-American communities, becoming the home to a successful black middle class. Demographics have changed since then, but what remains the same is the neighborhood’s comparatively lower home prices and proximity to bustling commercial districts. “Reid Park still has affordability. It’s close to literally everything, but prices are still affordable for most Charlotteans,” says Mark Weinberg, broker with Carolina Sky Real Estate Group who has almost a decade of experience in the business. Weinberg highlights that Reid Park is right between Uptown and Charlotte Douglas International Airport, connected to both via West Boulevard. Weinberg also notes Reid Park’s proximity to Lower South End, or LoSo, which is quickly transforming into a new cultural and entertainment district for residents just southwest of Uptown.

Midcentury and modernist homes by a golf course and creeks
Most of Reid Park’s residential streets branch off West Boulevard and roll down to Irwin Creek. Other properties sit next to Carolina Golf Club. Sidewalks are fairly uncommon, but streets are lightly trafficked in the first place. Some lots are packed with mature trees, providing plenty of shade during summers. Here, homebuyers will find a mix of new and vintage homes, with undeveloped, forested lots in between. “Reid Park isn’t quite a historic neighborhood, but you’ll find a lot of all brick houses with real craftsmanship, and a lot have been completely renovated,” says Amy Smith, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker and lifelong resident of Charlotte who has 6 years of experience representing transactions in the area. Midcentury cottages, American Craftsman bungalows and ranch-style homes go for around $250,000 to $325,000. 21st century constructions include New Traditional builds and custom homes with modernist influences. Their prices usually range between $300,000 and $400,000.

Local restaurants and a food co-op on its way
Aside from two Family Dollars, there’s not too much shopping in the immediate vicinity of Reid Park, but Smith points out that residents are very proactive in supporting each other in the absence of big supermarkets. Some residents grow their own fruits and vegetables in community gardens. Development of Three Sisters Farm and Market is also underway, a community-run food co-op expected to open its doors in early 2025. “There’s still a strong sense of community in that neighborhood,” Smith says. “After the pandemic, everything became isolated, but they’re still really involved there.” For supermarkets like Publix and Harris Teeter, residents will turn to nearby Lower South End, known as LoSo, but this growing commercial hub has much more to offer than just groceries. “LoSo has done a lot. They just completed a pickleball center, and they have a lot of breweries and restaurants. It’s very much a hangout spot for the under-35 generation,” Weinberg says. Chicken King is right on West Boulevard, a restaurant popular for their fish, burgers and all things chicken, from grilled chicken salad to gizzards. Alternatively, residents can take their tastebuds on a trip to Jamaica at Lawrence Caribbean Restaurant, which serves up roti, oxtail and other favorites.
