Close to the action in NoDa, but away from the traffic

Shannon Park is a midcentury neighborhood situated in Charlotte’s northeastern corner. Kirstan Hamilton, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker who has lived in Charlotte for over 30 years, recently sold a home in the neighborhood to a young couple and says, “They wanted to be where the action was, but not too close to the action and traffic.” While it used to be considered more of a neighborhood for families, that’s not the case anymore, according to Hamilton. "The neighborhood has a lot of diversity,” she says. “Older people and younger people from all walks of life.” Location plays a big role in the neighborhood’s newfound demographic. It's within reach of the NoDa arts district and the desirable Plaza Midwood areas. This residential community is surrounded by busy thoroughfares, The Plaza and Eastway Drive, which strengthen its connectivity to westward amenity-rich regions.

High quality homes on a quarter of an acre

“The homes there have great bones,” Hamilton says. “They’re not anything that was just popped up in a cookie cutter neighborhood.” Elongated brick ranch-style houses mingle with angular split-levels and new construction on sidewalk-lined streets. “There’s great spacing between the homes,” Hamilton says. “You’re not on a tenth of an acre, you’re more likely to get a quarter acre of land there, and that makes a difference.” Prices range from $230,000 to $640,000. In the northwest corner of the neighborhood, two- to three-bedroom townhouses and condos are priced from $179,000 to $310,000. About 53% of residents are renters. “For Charlotte and where it’s located, it’s very affordable,” Hamilton says. Madison Park's CAP Index crime score is 7 out of 10, higher than the national average of 4. The Shannon Park Neighborhood Association hosts a yearly National Night Out where residents can meet with local law enforcement and city officials in a casual setting that includes music, games and food.

Summer fun at Shannon Park Swim Club

Julian Underwood Park is on the east side of town. This tree-enshrouded lot contains small play areas and wide grassy spaces for picnics. Eastway Park is also located within a mile of the neighborhood and encompasses more than 90 acres for disc golf games or hikes through winding wooded footpaths. "Locals travel from neighboring regions to gather at Shannon Park Swim Club, a notable fixture residents appreciate during Charlotte’s balmy summer months," says Charlie Miller, broker/owner of 5 Points Realty, who has been selling homes in the Charlotte area for over 15 years. The vibrant swim club has been going strong since its founding in the mid-1960s. "It's old-school layout and friendly service maintain a busy community atmosphere," Miller says.

Vietnamese cuisine and nearby eats along Shamrock Drive

NoDa, Plaza Midwood and Uptown Charlotte are all a short drive away for an evening out. Closer to home, Lang Van on Shamrock Drive has been serving Vietnamese specialties since its original owner launched it over 20 years ago. “It’s won awards and has been around since the dawn of time,” Hamilton says. For a quick bite, there's Crispy Banh Mi and La Cabana Restaurant. Local markets are sprinkled throughout town for weekly grocery shopping, many stocking imported specialties. Nearby Plaza Hills features a Food Lion, familiar chain restaurants and retail shops. The Charlotte Museum of History sits on an eight-acre campus and houses several historical landmarks.

Traveling on Charlotte's major streets

“You have three major Charlotte streets right there: The Plaza, Shamrock and Eastway,” Hamilton says. “You can head to the University of North Carolina Charlotte or Uptown. You really are in the center of it all.” The trip to Charlotte's city center will take around 6 miles via The Plaza Road. Shannon Park Residents are mostly car-dependent, though CATS bus stops are on the edges of the neighborhood. “It’s got walkability, but not to Plaza Midwood or NoDa,” Hamilton says. Charlotte Douglas International Airport is a 28-mile drive.
