Where nature’s as easy to come by as suburban amenities
It takes a village to raise a child, but it takes Touchstone Village to provide homebuyers with charming houses and convenient access to trails and shopping centers. “It’s an older community that was built in the early to mid-1980s. You’ll see when you drive there that most people are fixing them up and modernizing them to today’s standards,” says Danielle Edwards, a former resident of Touchstone Village and Realtor with Re/Max who has been selling homes in Charlotte for 18 years.
But even if the homes are receiving updates, the neighborhood’s green spaces remain as accessible as ever. “The best part about living there is it backs up to Four Mile Creek Greenway, so if you like to go on walks and enjoy nature, the beautiful greenway is right there,” Edwards says. At the same time, shopping centers such as StoneCrest and Carmel Commons are both under 2 miles away for most homeowners. This combination of modern amenities, established woodlands and houses in transition makes Touchstone Village a community that few others in South Charlotte can match. Edwards: “If you’re looking for a neighborhood that exudes Southern charm and offers nature, soaring trees and quick access to everything, Touchstone Village is a hidden gem.”

Charming homes sell like hotcakes
Most homes follow Colonial Revival architecture, with brick or vinyl siding, shutters, decorative pediments and sometimes additional wings. Other homes follow Cape Cod and ranch-style designs. Touchstone Village is an old dog in comparison to some of Ballantyne’s more recent developments, but for a lot of buyers, that’s precisely the appeal. “Established homes are smaller. They’re tighter feeling, but they have character and charm,” Edwards says. “The new buyers coming in take pride in homeownership, and they’re renovating their homes to have modern farmhouse vibes or remodel them with their own modern twist.” Edwards further highlights the generous size of parcels, some reaching around half an acre. The many mature trees on these lots provide drivers, cyclists and pedestrians strolling down the neighborhood’s occasional sidewalks a canopy of shade during the warmer months. As Touchstone Village is on the smaller side, homes don’t enter the market much, but when they do, they’re usually gone before the end of the week. Prices range between $450,000 and $700,000, and the same holds true for the triangle of townhouses on the neighborhood’s northeast corner.

Great schools empower teachers to empower students
McAlpine Elementary is within the boundaries of this small neighborhood, earning a B-plus rating from Niche and equipping students with iPads and Chromebooks to enhance their learning. Kids can then move on to South Charlotte Middle and South Mecklenburg High, both of which receive impressive A-minus ratings. The donation-based South Meck Foundation provides grants to South Mecklenburg High teachers and in the past has helped classrooms obtain forensic science laboratory supplies, foreign language textbooks and more. A new high school less than three miles from most homes, Ballantyne Ridge High, is under construction and will be open for students in fall 2024.

Keeping Touchstone Village green
Four Mile Creek Greenway hugs the southern end of Touchstone Village, just one component of a greater, 12-mile network of trails. Trail access points branch off residential and commercial streets alike. “The beauty of the greenway is you can walk it to Starbucks and Trader Joe’s, and it now has access to the new high school,” Edwards says. Residents can also visit William R. Davie Park, boasting a fenced-in playground and a spacious dog park to let kids and canines romp free. At the park’s multipurpose field, athletes get to pick what sport they want to play or simply use the space to run around. Residents longing for the country club life are in luck. Cedarwood Country Club, Carmel Country Club and Quail Hollow Club are all a short drive away, all offering golf courses, fitness centers and social events.

Fancy eats and French treats
Aside from picking up grocery essentials at Harris Teeter and home décor at Target, residents might also stop by StoneCrest at Piper Glen to catch the latest film at the Regal cinema. Alternatively, residents can head over to Carmel Commons to pick up local produce for themselves at The Fresh Market and treats for their furry companions at Pet Supplies Plus. Both shopping centers are less than 2 miles away from most residences. And Trader Joe’s is within walking distance down Bevington Plaza. Whether locals are seeking to impress their families or a special date, Firebirds Wood Fired Grill promises to save the day, serving up steaks and seafood in a rustic yet refined atmosphere. And the surest way to satisfy a sweet tooth is taking a trip to Amélie's French Bakery and Café, specializing in French treats from pastries to macarons.
