A relaxed suburb with big changes coming
Turning off Freedom Drive in northwest Charlotte, the streets of Westchester are lined by old-growth trees that reveal this neighborhood’s established character. “There's a lot of community pride in these areas. Lots of people have been here since the very beginning,” says Patty Rainey, Realtor at Corcoran HM Properties. Kathryn Cook-Crespo, broker and Realtor with Nestlewood Realty, agrees: “There are people who’ve been there since day one. And now that those lifelong owners are starting to pass, those houses are starting to come on the market. But the joke is that once you live there, you’ll never leave because you’ll love it.” Lately, residents of Westchester have been given even more reasons to stay planted in this community. The Queen City is investing in the area’s economic growth, with key initiatives including grants to local restaurants and improving public safety practices.
Most neighborhood streets of Westchester are surrounded by massive old growth trees.

Housing prices below the metro median
With its northern portion of town dominated by warehouses and business parks, residential streets hug Freedom Drive in the south, a central route into bustling Uptown. Paw Creek's wooded tributaries restore a feeling of seclusion for Westchester residents, trickling along the neighborhood’s grassy hillsides. Midcentury ranch-style and split-level homes are planted evenly on tidy streets, shaded by lofty maples as old as the 1960s structures themselves. New Traditional houses with vinyl siding and an attached garage span from the early 2000s to brand-new constructions built within the past year. While the area’s median price hovers around $290,000, properties in need of some TLC can be purchased in the lower $200,000s, and new builds can climb into the upper $300,000s.

A neighborhood elementary school has made inspiring strides
Westchester is zoned to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, with some right in the neighborhood. Allenbrook Elementary is a short walk from some homes and was the focus of a 2023 NPR feature highlighting the administration’s recent success in making significant academic gains. The school’s rising test scores are a point of pride for the community, and Allenbrook has become a model for how other struggling schools can make a comeback. Allenbrook Elementary scores a C-plus from Niche, while Ranson Middle earns a C and West Charlotte High receives a C-minus. Families can also apply to send their students to regional charter and magnet programs through Charlotte-Mecklenburg’s school choice enrollment.

Paw Creek’s streams trickle into a neighborhood park
Eagles Nest Neighborhood Park provides Westchester residents with a small spread of green space. The cozy outdoor respite is tucked away behind cul-de-sac streets and features a unique play area for kids formed of rocky mounds and obstacles. There's also a picnic shelter, great for small gatherings on Charlotte's mild days. A small, trickling stream that runs through the park can be traced to its source at Paw Creek, which is slated to become a wooded greenway trail by fall 2024. The Paw Creek Greenway will connect nearby neighborhoods, including Westchester, to Robert L. Smith District Park, a popular spot for soccer games and rounds of disc golf. Regarding the creek, Cook-Crespo adds, “Charlotte passed a grant recently to help the stormwater issues around the greenways and waterways. Some areas near Paw Creek are flood zones, and the city is finally making some improvements, so it’s getting better.”

Local grocers and restaurants serve the neighborhood
Bringing new businesses to the Freedom Drive corridor is a significant part of the city’s plan for the area. Still, a handful of local restaurants have long been serving the neighborhood. Mister 3’s Crab Pot is a hotspot for seafood on the go. This hole-in-the-wall outpost on Bradford Drive has gained a prominent local standing with a strong social media presence. Its 48,000 Facebook followers watch for daily updates featuring deals and specials, including bountiful seafood platters and garlic shrimp dinners. Residents head north to Circle G for a hearty breakfast of crispy hashbrowns and fluffy pancakes. To the west, Ken Cooks is a soul food favorite located right next to the Dollar General in Pawtuckett Village Shopping Center. While there are no big-box supermarkets in the neighborhood, Thomasboro Grocery has been a decades-long community cornerstone that stays stocked with everyday needs.

Drive 5 miles to reach Uptown or the airport
Westchester is roughly a 5.5-mile ride from Center City via Freedom Drive, providing an alternative to highway driving. Entrances to Interstate 85 are just up the road from residents, putting them about 5 miles from Charlotte Douglas International Airport. Although this is a car-dependent area, improvements to walkability and transit have been in talks for the neighborhood, and Charlotte Area Transit System buses stop along all of Westchester’s main roads.

The jobs that I have had have been perfect for people in the range of my age, 16-18, but other than that you either have to go into a major career or get a junk job at a fast-food place.
