Investment and opportunity are coming to Wilson Heights
Although the residential section of Wilson Heights is rather small, with the community’s mature trees and private lots, residents can feel like they’re living off in the country. At the same time, they’re only a few minutes from two of Charlotte’s busiest interstates: 77 and 85. Wilson Heights has remained off the radar for a time, but this might be changing. “It’s a thriving area. The best thing that this part of Charlotte offers is its closeness to Uptown, which is only maybe 10 to 12 minutes away,” says Franchesca Wicker, Realtor with Fathom Realty who has been selling homes in The Queen City for a decade. “The investment opportunity is great, whether you’re buying an existing home or building a new one. I sold some acreage there, and the developer is going to build more detached homes or townhouses.” Angela Ambroise, Realtor with Urban Roots, is similarly enthused about Wilson Heights’ future. “That area’s going through a renaissance,” she says. “There are so many things that are happening in that part of town, and a lot of new investments being fused into that area. A lot of people are connecting to the Wilson Heights area for its culture.” Much of this culture can be found at Johnson C. Smith University, a historically black institution that hosts several community-wide events such as a Homecoming celebration.

These stores are most convenient to residents east of Interstate 77. For the most part, residents get their shopping done at strip malls a mile or two outside the neighborhood. Supermarkets include Aldi, Food Lion and Compare Foods. Sunflower Family Restaurant serves up American and Southern comfort breakfasts and brunches, with combinations such as shrimp and grits and chicken and waffles. Bob’s Carry Out Pile ‘Em Up is accurately named, giving patrons hearty portions of bacon and French fries to go with their gizzards, cheeseburgers and other American dishes. Playing with the Carolina Panthers
Wicker highlights Hornets Nest Park, which offers a few unique amenities. “They have a little play complex that they set up with a Carolina Panthers theme. It’s got a mock football field and play structures for kids,” she says. Daredevils can take their bikes down the BMX while anglers can enjoy lazy days fishing at the pond. The Friendship Sportsplex is a bit closer to Wilson Heights, within walking distance of some homes. Athletes regularly play baseball and kickball at the park’s diamonds, and kids enjoy climbing the jungle gym. For more sports fun, Fred Alexander Park has basketball and tennis courts, along with another playground. Victory Lane Karting might be known best for their indoor go-kart track, but the facility offers other activities, too, such as axe throwing and escape rooms. Visitors can fight zombies, travel back to the Wild West and go on loads of adventures in the VR arena.

Wilson Heights has midcentury homes and fresh constructions
Wilson Heights can be divided into a few small subdivisions, which are separated by industrial parks, Friendship Missionary Baptist Church and Interstate 77. The commotion of the interstate can be noisy, but fortunately, old growth forests muffle the sounds of traffic and make subdivisions into private, green oases. Wilson Heights’ open, tree-filled yards and wide, unlined roads give it a very rural look. New developments tend to come with sidewalks, but since most subdivisions only have one entrance point, roads don’t attract much traffic in the first place. Homes range from midcentury cottages and ranchers to New Traditional builds from the 2010s. Prices usually run from $190,000 to $370,000. There are a few remaining undeveloped lots as well. Properties don’t enter the market often, but they’re usually swept up within 20 days.

“The good thing about that area is it’s close to a historically black university, Johnson C. Smith University. Their homecoming is really big,” Wicker says. “I went a couple of times, and they had parades, guest speakers, food trucks and parties, both during the day and at night.” Wicker also highlights the university’s Juneteenth celebration.
