Revamped Chattanooga neighborhood with boutiques and green space

Butch Leftwich grew up around the Northshore area of Chattanooga and recalls a slightly different place than what exists today. “It was more of a small community, like a small town. Most of the people knew each other. It was just a good neighborhood atmosphere,” says Leftwich, the facilities manager for the Frances B. Wyatt Community Center right outside the eastern edge of the neighborhood. “It’s changed. It turned more into a commercial type atmosphere than what it was back in the day when I was growing up there.” Northshore is among the parts of the city that best illustrates Chattanooga’s efforts over the years to revamp much of its urban scape. A major chunk of the southern end is filled with boutique establishments that include dessert shops, apparel stores, cafes, art galleries and a diverse mix of restaurants. These places can be in rows of modern multi-story brick buildings with residences on the upper floors and repurposed industrial structures. Frazier Avenue in particular features more classic buildings no taller than a couple stories and with vintage glass storefronts. Balancing this dense lineup of shops are outdoor recreational sites on both ends of the neighborhood. Residents can choose anything from impressive, overlooking views of downtown Chattanooga from Stringers Ridge Park to kayaking and paddleboarding outings on the Tennessee River. The city has grown over the years with the help of companies like Amazon and Volkswagen and a unique fiber-broadband network, and Northshore provides an added incentive with its blend of natural scenery and commercial activities. “You’re not going to find too many areas as hilly as it is, but it’s a good atmosphere to it,” Leftwich says. “And the weather. We have greater weather around here. There’s only about a couple weeks every year where it gets really cold or gets snow. It’s a good climate to live in.”

The extensive lineup of boutiques along Manufacturers and Frazier

The core of Northshore’s dining and shopping scene can be found along Manufacturers Road, Cherokee Boulevard and Frazier Avenue, with bustling foot traffic often seen along the sidewalks. Among the few popular places here is Edley’s Bar-B-Que, an acclaimed family-owned and Nashville-founded chain known for its meats smoked on White Oak. Other places include the Milk & Honey coffee bar, where patrons can enjoy breakfast items like Belgian waffles and egg and cheese biscuits paired with bowls of berries. More comfort meals exist at Signal Mill, a nearly 3-acre site and repurposed textile mill that also happens to house office spaces. A Whole Foods on Manufacturers Road provides of a few nearby grocery shopping options.

Abundance of recreation from Stringers Ridge to the Tennessee River

On the north end is Stringers Ridge Park, a 92-acre urban green space where both cyclists and hikers can take to the 7 miles of trail to explore the forested hills. Then to the south is Renaissance Park and its 23 acres of wetlands. The network of trails there connects to neighboring Coolidge Park, which counts an antique carousel among its distinct amenities. Agile park goers can try out some rock climbing, while the atmosphere is often abuzz with excitement during the summer as children splash around in the water fountain. Sculptures of animals that include a lion and turtle stand watch around the fountain, as parents on the nearby stepped seating look on and mingle. The park is close to the Walnut Street Bridge, a restored pedestrian bridge that takes users over the river and allows them to either continue along the 13-mile Tennessee Riverwalk or explore downtown Chattanooga and its many institutions on foot. Kayakers and small boat users can also reach Maclellan Island, a nearly 19-acre sanctuary and renown bird nesting site right in the middle of the river. Visitors can even set up camp on the island.

From classic century-old houses to new condos and Traditionals

The housing in Northshore reflects multiple generations. Older communities can be found in the neighborhood’s heart, in the area around Bell Avenue, where small and century-old Craftsmen and bungalows are not uncommon. The small lots around here occasionally feature short wooden fences and small grass and gravel driveways. A number of modern multi-story condo buildings built either over the past few years or during the 2000s are scattered across the neighborhood. Then, the north end features many newer Traditional and contemporary style homes in the hills and on lots lining smoothly paved walkways. Price points for the more than century-old homes can go from the upper $300,000s for a Craftsman bungalow to over $1 million for a Colonial Revival with Greek touches. Price points for the newer Traditional houses can run between $1 million and $1.5 million. Two-bedroom condos can go from the mid-$200,000s to around $650,000, with overall size and age playing a role.

A variety of schools serve the neighborhood. Northshore is naturally zoned for Red Bank Elementary School, Red Bank Middle School and Red Bank High School, all of which respectfully received grades of B, B-minus and B-minus from ratings site Niche. A few schools, however, are far closer. The Normal Park Museum Magnet School, located within the neighborhood bounds, serves students in kindergarten through eighth grade. Normal Park, which received an A-minus from Niche, places a special emphasis on certain subjects, including technology, art and music. The school boasts locally made artistic installations, as well as what it calls “edible” gardens for use in its science curriculum.
